We're taking a 2 week soon and of course some weird thing is going on with the Vette. The volume does not maintain a level output. It dosen't go higher than its set point but fluctuates between that and almost nothing. I have a KENWOOD DDX 795 and the rest is the OEM Bose system. I was thinking the amplifier, but thought I'd check here for input.
It could be one of the connections behind the head unit. No way to know for sure without troubleshooting. When I was installing my Pioneer head unit, I turned it on after connecting all the wiring with the Pac interface. As I was positioning the head unit to install it, I noticed the sound kept going really low as I was moving the head unit. I was losing some of the speakers as I kept moving things around. Turned out my Pac interface was the problem and had a bad connection. I would get all the speakers back when I applied pressure to the wire harness that plugged into the Pac module, and then would lose some of the speakers when I let go. I ended up having to replace the Pac module with a new one and problem was solved. Luckily I spotted the issue before I was finished with the install. You may be having a similar issue, so I would start there, by checking all the wiring behind the head unit and with the interface.

TorchRedFred thanks for your input. I took out my Kenwood and put the stock radio back in. Took a test drive and no volume issues. I put the Kenwood back in and checked connections. Took a test drive and erratic volume returned. I'm not sure why, but I can't hear any volume changes sitting in my garage with the top up, so I have to drive around the block to hear it.
I've also been having battery discharge problems for several months and can't say for sure, but seems since I had the Kenwood installed. Pulling the radio fuse would help the battery discharge issue. I've read somewhere the PAC interface could cause problems. I'll call the PAC folks next week, tried today but they may be off on holiday. Hopefully they'll send me a new module and I'll sell the goods.
Bottom line, I'm putting the stock radio back in and getting the aux input adapter.

Sorry to hear about your issues. An aftermarket head unit is a huge upgrade over the factory unit imo. So hopefully it can get sorted out because the end result is well worth it. As far as battery drain issues, as long as everything was wired correctly (including any cameras), battery drain should not be an issue with a aftermarket head unit. I would try a new Pac module first. No need to redo the wiring, just swap out the blue box and see if it makes any difference. Good luck.
BTW, battery drain has nothing to do with the HU in these cars. They all need to be on a tender when parked for more than a few days. It's the passive key FOB detection sensors being always on...that's a big drain by itself.
