Default Speaker Advice

Looking for some speaker advice. I currently have an ‘02 Z06 with stock speakers and a Kenwood DMX906S using the axxess harness. Pretty underwhelmed with the audio quality. Would leaving the bose door woofers alone and going with aftermarket coaxial speakers front/rear offer good sound quality? Probably first choice if it would be worthwhile. A second option is pulling the door woofers (allowing larger speakers up front) and putting a sub elsewhere but I’d rather not give up trunk space - I’m usually pretty full when I head to track events. I’m not an audiophile so I don’t need anything crazy. For example, I’m very happy with the same DMX906S using the factory Infinity system in my ‘08 Wrangler which I know isn’t cream of the crop. TIA.

Hard to say man. Once you start down the road of audio upgrades, you realize quickly just how crappy the Bose garbage is. I didn't even have plates on the car before I gutted that crap. After you do that...you'll realize you need a sub, and then it's the downward spiral.

Tons of options out there, I recommend hitting up several audio shops and just listening to different components.
My opinion:
If you're not wanting to add a sub, I would give these Focal a try:

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_091ISU...00.html?tp=106
  • handles up to 80 watts RMS power range (160 watts peak)
  • frequency response: 40-21,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 93 dB
  • woofer top-mount depth: 2-1/2"
You will have to make a plate for the speakers, but well worth it. Add some Dynamat to the doors for better bass response also. You can also add a mini amp and hide it in the dash for more power. I would not do anything with the rear factory speakers.

The best option if you want to keep the space is a 4 way amp with all new speakers. I'd recommend a pro series mid-range or mid bass speakers and a 3.5 inch tweeter with a bass blocker for the doors. You will need as much bass as you can get without a sub. Something like the system below will sound like you are at a concert without breaking the budget.

That's a good selection of components man. The only one I don't agree with is the 5.25" being a coaxial. Having high frequencies coming from behind doesn't do anything to help the sound stage. Ask me how I know. LOL!
