Looking for any recent info on Android head unit installs in C6's. I'm looking for recommendations on an Android HU with Wifi and possibly the ability to use the HU as a dash cam. I'm pretty sure the latest Pumpkin for example on Amazon is a Android 9.0 etc with at least two video in channels. I think I can download a dash cam app and use a back up camera as an input to record video as a dash cam. Hoping someone else has tried it. If anyone has a good Android HU installed I'd like to hear form them.
I'd suggest staying away from the cheap Chinese stereos (Pumpkin) and instead buying a good quality name system (Pioneer, Kenwood etc.) you'll be happy you did in the long run. I myself have a Pioneer system that allows for the connection of two cameras (front and back). The front camera I also hooked up a small 12v dvr using some splitter cables that records what the front camera sees automatically on a SD card anytime the car's running, I also have it set to automatically overwrite old videos when the SD card gets full. So what I have it's basically like a dash cam, but everything hidden, and automatic. It also came with a remote control so I can also play back the video from the dvr on the head unit, change setting etc. I mounted the dvr in the glove box. Here's a couple photos of it.
Thats exactly and I want to do, nicely done. I found an alpine hu that I like so maybe I'll go the route instead of the pumpkin. Do you have a link for that dvr?

Oh yes, you'll be much better off with the Alpine, even at that I suggest you don't cheap out, and suggest you buy a higher end Alpine. I personally went with the top of the line at the time Pioneer system. Here's a link to the DVR you requested.
Thanks bud!
I've been looking at dash cam android apps and I feel like it should be possible to download one of those apps and get the hu to handle the recording and writing over, etc and not have to run a separate dvr but if it's working well for you maybe that's just what I'll do.

Anyone using a traffic cam app from android playstore ? I believe this will give the head unit the ability to record and overwrite video from (hopefully multiple cameras) to SD card in the HU and bypass the need for a standalone DVR unit.

I believe the traffic cam apps only help you to determine the location of traffic cameras that are set up to catch people who run red lights, and not for the purpose of to operate, control, or have any functionally whatsoever over any of the cameras you may have installed on the car, I've also never heard of any head unit that has the ability to record anything such as the video from cameras you have connected to the head unit on an SD card, the SD card slot on head units is for playback only.
That's not what I meant, like a black box, that's that they call them sometimes. I've seen a few apps that will use a cell phone (android) as a dash camera, ie; constant recording and recording over previous footage at given intervals so you don't have to erase the sd card all the time. They work on android phones so I'm assuming they will work with an android HU, just trying to find one what will allow for multiple cameras ( our family business is a small trucking company and I want to use the C6 as the test car and put the same setups in the trucks. If you search the google play store you can find a lot of them, still looking for anyone who's used any of them. I'm hoping to find one that will run multiple cameras, front and rear at least, and tore to the sd card and also work in the background, I don't want to have to turn it on everything I start the car and I don't want it on the screen I just want it running in the background unless I need to pull the tape then I can open the app on the hu. . I'm not sure if it's quite here yet but I think it may be. .

Yeah, I just don't think what you're trying to accomplish will work with these head units, I'm sure someone else would have stepped in here by now, and explained whether or not it was possible, which no one has. I'm all Apple myself running a Pioneer system and I can tell you there's no such thing with my setup.
You're aware, and OK with, the camera only recording with the car on. Seems like most people buying dash cams do it more for when the car is off.
Well I guess it depends on what you're trying to achieve, with most dash cams, they mount to the dash, windshield or mirror. With mine, it's the same type of camera that I also used in the back for a back up camera, that I mounted to the front of the car, with the recorder mounted in the glove box, so I'm only interested in using it in the event I'm in an accident that's someone else fault, and want video proof of it, and I can also use it to view parking blocks on my head unit to see how close I'm getting to them when pulling into a parking spot. Also, since I already have a radar detector mounted to my mirror, I didn't want anything else cluttering up my windshield or dash. I guess If you live in an area where you're concerned about someone hitting you car when your not there, or vehicle break ins, (which I'm not) then I could see you possibly wanting a dash, windshield, or mirror mount with it being able to run with the car off, however if someone is going to break into your car to steal stuff, they're going to probably take your camera also anyway, besides (with my particular setup) if I left it so it's powered on when the car is off, it would end up draining the battery. This shows where I have my camera's mounted on the front.

I get that, but I've always wondered about that "proof it was someone else's fault" stuff. I doubt it ever helps. FL for example is a nonfault state, the video evidence won't make any difference to you. In most states, unless you accept fault, it becomes no fault. So you're gonna be paying your deductible anyways. You might have footage of the incident for your insurance company to not care about, but I digress.
I could see it in a commercial application, big trucks open up a lot more liability and a lot more jackasses trying to make a buck off an insurance claim.
I only want it for when the car is on, I'm fighting electricity demons my fkn C6 dies overnight once every couple weeks already. I just haven't had time to figure out why but that's besides the point.
I'm also trying to collect from some idiot who crashed into my stopped in traffic peterbilt, he was running up the shoulder at 80 and clipped me, if I had the on camera it would have helped for sure. Everyone who hits a semi gets "hurt" and usually collects, even when it's their fault, I'm sick of it.

The way I see it is that if it helps me out in an accident, great, it was worth the additional $60 for the DVR (I already had the front camera installed, so the DVR was an afterthought), If I never need or use the recording for anything, I'm only out the $60.
