At this point I'm looking at all the brands (Alpine, Pioneer Premier, etc). A local shop carries Eclipse. I haven't seen too much said about them here. any opinions?
check out a few car audio forums.. like.. http://www.caraudioforum.com .. anddo a search on the head unit. youll get lots of owners opinions that way. You may want to look up "Eskips" because for some reason a lot of people refer to them as that... :blueangel:
Fujitsu Ten used to be a very low quality HU- that for many years didn't even have pre-amp outs. (Think- a tape deck that had a fast-forward selection only, that also served as an eject button when pushed hard enough- with an analog display for radio stations). Lately the quality is better- but after comparing specs with other brands, I don't think they are worth the higher prices they use for MSRP. Personally, I'd look elsewhere. I'd look at specs too- learn what they mean, and compare.
I had an eclipse HU that i bought new about 4 years ago. Absolutely loved it. Only CD player with a white/black face that matches. Can't vouch for the new designs, but my old one rocked. Why did i leave it in my car when trading in???
Re: What do think of Eclipse headunits? (old coons)
love there new high end subs but i haven't done much with the decks. i just can't get past what pioneer offers for the dollar. $220 gets you the whole ball of wax on ebay.
Re: What do think of Eclipse headunits? (Nevermind)
Eclipse is good. Depends what you are looking for. Each unit has strengths and weaknesses and each line has its entry level models and kick tail units. I'd put the brand near the top with Alpine, some Clarion, and Nak but each unit for different reasons.
I've had a CD5000 and CD7100 (I think that's the model number nd have been very happy with both of them. Only complaint is the display in bright sunlight and size of text on display. I'm not as young as I once was so it may just be my eyes startng to go.
My Eclipse has been the best sounding HU I've owned and that's why I bought it...
I have a CD5030 and Love mine, I have a 16gb USB flash drive hooked up and it works like a charm, My only complaint is the bluetooth its not that clear for people to hear me, but I can hear them fine.
I have had mine for a little over a year with no complaints.
Only problem with eclipse is they are no longer being produced for the US market. No customer service, and if you get a NAV unit you'll not get updates. if you don't care about that kind of stuff, its a good buy.
My biggest complaint with Eclipse is that alot of their head units don't have a pause button. I know, im knit picking.

I've got an Eclipse 5495 that I only used for a short time that I will sell cheap. It's in the original box and just sitting on a shelf in my garage. I pulled it from my wife's Jag when we sold it. It sounded GREAT. It has a built in 30 gig HDD for ripping your own CD's and is generally a very nice unit. PM me if anyone is interested. Here's detailed info about it.
I have 2 or 3 Eclipse 8053 and 8443 HUs, only using one, just cannot seem to let them go but they never die so spares not really needed
They kick the crap out of the vast majority of what is on the market right now, maybe all of them!
I am even considering taking an 8053 apart to just use the DAC and processors in it with the face mounted under the console lid for tuning, etc....
I could even give up the ashtray since no use to me anyway and mount it there but would rather not see it.
One of the full size NAV units on the market has digital out so I could have the NAV and good audio at the same time, something none of the units have on their own.
I have an eclipse in my 05 vette. It's ok. The things I don't like are:
1) the nav doesn't keep a signal when car shuts off (can take up to 5 minutes to find it)
2) there's no clock unless you have a nav signal
3) no pause button for cd or ipod.
4) very hard to see during the day (have a clear roof)
5) sticks out a little to far from dash
