Follow-up to the ALPINE question since you guys are so good ...
The car I bought also has a DENON 10-disc changer mounted in the back, model DCH-520. It does not appear to be hooked up to the ALPINE. In general, what are DENON's supposed to be compatible with?
I think the second owner of this car put in the ALPINE to replace whatever had previously operated the DENON changer. Thanks.
Re: Next easy question: DENON CD changer (jwade91)
I have the same unit in the basement (in a pile of other decks, speakers, etc.). They will work with Denon decks, which are about 8-10 years old, or some older sony decks. If you don't have the deck, don't waste your time. I have the unit and a deck that works but its missing a ****. It would be cheaper to get a new unit to work with what you have than try to make it work with something. Also, they had specific cable that needed to be used and only let it hook up to some and not all units. The housing was originally made by sony and then the electrionics were added by denon. They were tempermental prone to skipping and breaking thanks to the inferior sony design. I still however use 3 of the CD cartridges to carry my disks in the jeep. If you're still interested, email the denon techs. (Do I pass?) :lurk:
Re: Next easy question: DENON CD changer (92TripleBlack)
Thanks, I guess I'll just take it out sometime and set it aside somewhere ... probably the trash if my wife sees it. Yeah, I tried DENON, but no response. I figured you might be the one to chime in ... you are one of the ones who always seems to know these sorts of things.
Unfortunately, the ALPINE in-dash 3 CD changer in the car seems prone to skipping as well for some reason. Maybe it's just old too. It surprises me about the ALPINE. My $140 Pioneer I had in the '91 Vette didn't skip at all even after a few years, and that was a much rougher ride. I haven't had an ALPINE in a while. I quit buying their products after being ripped off a couple of times. Pioneer's don't seem to be as attractive to would be theives.
Do you think the ALPINE is worth having serviced? The model number on it is 3DE-7887.
Re: Next easy question: DENON CD changer (jwade91)
After all those miles it might just be loose. It needs to be rock tight to stop skipping. Front and rear. Maybe open up the dash and tighten her down would solve most of your skipping problems. Also, you may have old or hard tires, as well as shocks going. These can also dramatically increase skipping. Try this before servicing. If getting it seviced costs more than $200 including labor, skip it and get new. You are pushing into replacement territory.
As for the Denon's, this was one of the lines we carried at my old shop. Decent electronics but poor transports. This is the main reason you don't see them in the car audio business anymore. They got tired of fixing things they didn't make.
