I want to upgrade the HU in my c6 but do not want to put a mic in the headliner for phone calls.
There're no radios that I've ever seen with a built in mic, they all have an external mic. What most of us have done was to run the mic up to the top of the drivers side "A" pillar and mount the mic there by the stock mic using some double sided tape, and you don't really even notice it there.
I stuck my mic in the driver's side of the center vent; it is on the inside as in you have to look in the vent to see it It seems to work OK but I don't use it a lot as my car has headers and Corsa Xtreme exhaust which makes conversation difficult.
Nothing wrong with the mic sitting at the top-back of the steering wheel bezel, easy to route & mount it there. I ran mine across the headliner molding to the rear mirror, easy to tuck the wire into the molding from the A-pillar.
I know there is or was at least one head unit that had a built in mic. Probably more than one. The one I am thinking of may have been an Alpine model. You may have to do some research.
