Default Camera install troubles

Audio/camera question. Im attempting to put in front and rear cameras on a Kenwood DDX6705s. Rear camera works as advertised. Front camera also functions connected to rear input (so i know the camera is good) but I cannot get the HU to see the front camera connection. Connected to the RCA cable and pos/ground connections and the HU wont see it (verified good ground and pos connections). Any connection of the signal wire results in the HU shorting out (kinda expected with pos/grd already connected). What am I missing here?

Have you tried connecting the rear camera to the front inputs to verify that the HU functions properly with a different camera?

If it does the same thing with the known good rear camera connected, then you either have a bad wiring harness or an issue with the head unit itself.

I have tried both cameras on both inputs. Both work on the rear, neither work on the front. Was hoping I was missing something but my guess right now is that either the input from the H/U is bad, or something more internal. Either way is the HU and not something I can get around.

Don’t know if this’ll fix things, but did you go through the settings on your head unit to see if you need to enable something in there for the front camera ?

I did. It just says cannot communicate with camera. Which is also what it said when nothing is connected.

Is the HU new or you've had it a while (how old?) and just now connecting the cams? There's just the one RCA plug for front, so if it ain't working maybe that cable, power or ground wire, or plug is damaged, so check all the leads with a meter? Can you get support from where you bought it?

Are you sure you are doing the wiring correctly? When you say signal wire, are you referring to the front camera?

If you are talking about the front camera, connect it without the trigger/signal wire and let us know if it works.

no signal wire. I tried connecting it just to see if it would do anything. Either way, no luck. Camera works on the rear input as it should.

it's older, 2007. It was a used find for $100. So I won't be surprised if the input is just dead.

I only went with a backup camera when I did my install. If I am parking somewhere with a curb, I was always backing it in anyway.

If you absolutely need a front camera, you can potentially still do it, but it's not going to be cheap.

You would have to get a new interface module, a PAC GM1A-RST (US$399) and a PAC VS41 (US$309) video switcher and then wire that accordingly to the reverse video input. The VS41 can accept up to 4 cameras, so you would connect your front and reverse cameras to it. Your cameras would trigger the VS41 input and it would in turn trigger the reverse video input on your head unit. When wiring the PAC, you would also need to NOT connect the reverse trigger on the GM1A-RST to the head unit.

I cannot guarantee this would work, but it should.
