Default Key FOB(s) & memory settings

Over the past 12 or so years I've had 2 C5's. I bought a 2001 coupe in 2013 that I have kept until August of this year. I traded it in on a C7 2016 Convertible. In 2019 acquired a 2002 Convertible. I still have this one. So now I have a C5 and a C7.

On the C5 FOB's I can set the memory 1 or memory 2 based on the key FOB #1 or #2. When I unlock the vehicle, get in close the door and put the key in the ignition the memory would set corresponding with the key FOB #1 or #2.

My question is, "Does the C7 have the same or similar setup memory as the C5's?" if so, how do you coordinate the FOB to the memory settings? Why do you always have to push and hold the #1 or #2 button until the memory setting positions are finished???

What am I missing?

I have a C6 not a C7, but I believe that the operate the same. The answer is yes, the fobs do tell the car to go into the memory 1 or memory 2 setting IF they are programmed as the memory settings are set in the same position in the car memory, i.e. 1 and 2. The C7 can memorize up to 8 Fobs total. So for example, if for some reason, the fobs you have were lost, and then reprogrammed repeatedly, they could actually be programmed as positions 4 and 5. This means that they would not be holding the 1 and 2 position in the car memory and able to utilize the needed spots to correspond to the car memory.

In order to make the Fobs do what you want, you need to determine where they sit in the programming hierarchy. You can do that by going through a programming cycle and trying to "ADD" an additional fob. When you get the car into the programming mode, it will tell you which number fob it is ready to program. If it is any number other than 3, your fobs are not 1 and 2., and won't be able to match your memory settings. If that is the case, you would need to wipe out the memory of your fobs, and reprogram them completely so that they are 1 and 2. Then they will be able to do what you would want. It's really not that hard to do, as long as your car is an American version and NOT Canadian. There are step by step instructions on here about adding one fob to see what the next logical number would be in the memory, as well as redoing all the fobs to get you to 1 and 2 if needed. I

IF your fobs are 1 and 2 already in the system, (when you try to program a new fob it shows it is ready to program fob number 3) you would cancel out of the programming mode. Then you have some other problem with the memory system in your car. You should only have to set the memory settings once, hear the beep that acknowledges they are set, and then you should be good to go.
