Antenna issue not in archives
I searched the archives and did not find this issue.
I have an 01 convertible and the previous owner installed a Pioneer head unit. I get reception but it is weak, so naturally I checked the antenna and it is not going up at all. I am guessing it has something to do with the wiring of the new unit. Obviously the antenna wire is hooked up to it or I would get nothing but static. I do not want to go down a worm hole and start going through the wires at the head unit without a schematic. I am OK with replacing the antenna mast with a rubber mini unit.
I attempted to raise the mast manually but it just pulls back down. I figure that this means the plastic ribbon is still attached and not broken.
I can buy a replacement mast at https://antennamastsrus.com/ their replacement has what looks like a brass sleeve that mounts where the original mast was and the rubber antenna mounts to it.
MY QUESTION, . Can I just pull out the mast with brute force breaking or stripping the plastic ribbon? OR, should I remove the whole thing to work on it?
If I do remove the entire unit will the antenna lead come off the power unit, of is it hard wired to it?
Thanks in advance, JIM
Why do you think that there's something wrong with your antenna if it worked (at all) before?
Have you checked that the antenna lead is fully pushed into the head unit? ( it could be a pain but you have to start there)
Edit: if it was a 50-70yo car, sure, it could be old wiring. but a 2001? No

The interface units have a wire for the power antenna.
I do feel that the antenna is probably working, I feel that the installer did not wire it properly, I found plastic bags in the box that the new radio came in that were from axxess units, and some type interface for the bose speakers. The radio works fine, sounds good, but looses reception easily. Rather than open the dash I was just thinking that I would just replace the power antenna with a stubby one.
Thanks again. JIM
