Default Subwoofer talk

Ok. Simple enough questions.

1. What is the difference between a dual voice coil sub and a single voice coil sub?

2. When would you buy a 2 ohm sub vs. a 4 ohm sub? I was under the impression when have a 2 ohm stable amp, or 1ohm stable for parrallel wiring of two.

3. Which is the best for a single ten in a coupe? And, how are the Alpine S or R series subwoofers?? I would like to get and Alpine Amp and Sub. I have heard the Alpine Type R components aren't the top of the line. Is this true??

Thanks

I can say that from what I have heard from others, heard in a Vette that #3 would be either a single or double JL 10w7 or single 12w7.

The JL 10W3 is a nice sub... The W7 is just sick.

There are a couple of other brands that are very nice, too... others should chime... but I have no personal experience.

if you check the JL Audio site, http://www.jlaudio.com, there should be directions on wiring up.

my 10W3v2 is a 2 ohm duel voice coil... and the amp sees 4 ohms...

1. DVC subs allow you more ways to wire them up, more choice in ohm load. sound wise, you won't really notice a difference. Also DVC subs are heavier.

2. Which sub to get depends on your amp and how many subs you plan on running, so you can get the proper final ohm load.

3. Personally I'm an Elemental and Adire fan. I'm not familiar on Apline subs. Yes it's true that the Type R comps aren't top of the line... But you want an all Alpine setup then that's what you're stuck with.

Thanks for the info. I had a JL W0 in my old wrangler four years ago. I loved that sub. Gave it to a friend when I bought the C4 b/c i never planned on touching the stereo. Now, i wish i'd kept it. I was liking the new W3v2. We'll have to see... :D

As far as the sub and amp, it all depends on what you want? really loud? really tight bass? how much do you want to spend?

The Alpine Type R components are probably the best components under $175 IMO.

Metal_Wulf,
Those subs look pretty impressive how do they sound??? I take it that yes nod is coming from experience :D I like the shallow mounting depth.

Kumar,
I like bass that is tight, but hits hard:smash: I don't like to be heard coming down the street, but i certainly want to hear the bass in the driver's seat. I generally prefer my LPF filter pretty low. 60-80mhz ( I think- its been a while:D) I listen to rock most (some hard), followed by the occasional pop/ R&B stuff. Rock gets annoying with a lot of 100- 300 mhz bass buzzing- so i leave that to the smaller front speakers. Thanks, again.

The K's sound great, you can't go wrong with anything from Elemental.

Metal_Wulf,

Just wondering why you dislike JL Audio subs so much.

Because there are better subs for a cheaper price. With all JL stuff you're paying for the name as well.

I'm a big fan of Elemental and Adire, which sub for sub will blow away any JL and for less $$

To each his own I guess.

I did, however, just instal a 15" Brahma in my friends Rustang....has a Kicker 1200 amp running to it (rated over 1400...assuming everything electrical is running properly).

He broke it in...and lemme say...it is a beafy sub...very very nice.

More pics on my site

Anyway...I use to have two JL Audio 10" W7's in the explorer...I will be putting one of them in the vette with a JL 500/1.

Has anyone done this yet (with a W7)? If so, how does it sound? I'm debating to have it ported or not....

Brahma's kick azz!! If I didn't need to leave room for my T-Tops in the back of my car, I would have went with them. But Insted I'm going with E12A's from Elemental, and I know I'll be happy with them :D

Yes, with JL, some of the price is for the name and engineering staff. But to say an Adire or Elemental will Blow an equivalent JL away is a pretty bold statement, and one that I don't think you could back up. And yes, I know all about the penny pinchers on the car audio forums that lived and died by Adire and now the hot Elemental subs.

I have a 12W7, just waiting on Alping to get off their butt and make the D900 and H700.. so i can start my install.

I personally have met some of the engineers and VP's of JL. They are all great people, and make the very good product. The engineering and inovation in their product is the top of the industry. Very few companies lead the sub market, and innovate.

Their amps are rock solid. I used to love PG amps, but hated the fact that they didn't make rated power with the car off.

I do love the regulated power supply on their amps, I wish more companies would start doing that...

I have not been keeping up with JL...what is the D900 and H700?

Also, I assume by your post that you mean that you have not installed the sub yet...is this a correct assumption?

Thanks!
