Default Speaker options-need advice and opinions

The original stereo head in my 1984 Vette has been replaced with a JVC AM/FM/CD unit. The original Bose speakers are still in the car. They sound terrible-I get a lot of hiss and pop from the front, and thumping from the rear. I have blown the stereo fuse twice. I understand the Bose speakers are not compatible with a non-Bose head unit. Can I simply pull the original speakers and amplifier units and replace with new speakers? Any thoughts or ideas on brands or installation techniques?

Default Re: Speaker options-need advice and opinions (efweber)

I bought a double-DIN Clarion unit on e-bay for $110. It took 8 hours to install in my '92 vert including making new mounting straps, running an adapter plug to the under-dash receiver (left that in, unplugged) and running new speaker wires. I wired directly to the Blose speakers and bypassed their local amps. It sounded OK, but I read that they are 1-ohm impedance while most systems are 4-ohms per channel, so I could have overdriven my amp and blew fuses. I bought 4 new speakers at Wal-Mart. They have a good size selection in JVC and Pioneer, as well as all other adapter hardware needed. It took less than an hour to install the new speakers since I already had run new wires, and the connectors were the same. It looks and sounds a lot better than the stock Blose Gold unit. Good luck. :seeya
