I have 3 cars, a boat, and a boring office job.
I would really like to be able to take my music with me whenever I'm moving around. So I've been looking at portable MP3 players, hard-drive based only. I can get the AUX input adapters for each vehicle to pump sound in, that's easy enough.
I've read the reviews at CNET.com, but haven't drawn any conclusions yet. Any recommendations?
I must have bought 6 mp3 players until I finally spent the cash and bought the iPod. I could kick myself for not doing it sooner. If you want I'll give you a great deal on my iPod with 10gig hard drive. I've seen the new models and they are slick.
:iagree: I have an iPod and love it. Excellent piece of technology. Its a little pricey but I'm happy i have it. There are new ones out now, but they offer no advantages over the old style.
I've read some great things about the iPOD, but the biggest turn-off is when the battery pack dies, you're screwed. Apple has made it non-replaceable, so you gotta buy a whole new unit.
The eDigital O1000 looks really good, albeit larger in size. They will replace the battery pack for $35.
i have the archos jukebox (20 gig) and love it. It also doubles as an external USB hard drive.
I have a 20 GB Archos. It is great. I am sure the iPODs are better, but I can't justify throwing mine away and spending a whole lot more for the iPOD. The Archos has replaceable rechargable NiMH batteries which are also a plus.
The Archos plays great through my Delco/Bose head unit with the PIE converter and Corvette harness.
I've also got the Archos 20gig with close to 600 full CDs on it. I use it as a spare drive for moving files also. Another handy use was storage of digital photos on a trip to Europe last summer. I've also got an FM broadcast unit to send to the car radio for playback during driving.
Another thing you might look into - the newer car radios have a head unit that removes and you plug into your PC to download MP3's. They also have 20 gig units. When I re-do my interior, that the direction I'm going. Will make the Archos obsolete for auto use.

I'd do my research on those indash HD Head Units. I bought a Sony (pc. of junk:mad ). They DON'T download MP'3s. You have to rip the songs from an original CD that converts it to ATRAC3 or some other compression that isn't mp3. Sony does it, Pioneer does it and I think Kenwood's music Keg does it too.
The Alpine HDA-5460 is one of the units I was thinking about. They claim MP3 and WMA formats and are delivered with corresponding software for downloading. After your experience with Sony, I will probably study the product reviews for a while.
That unit must me brand new because it wasn't available when I bought the CDA-7997. That unit looks good. But it's only a HDD and CD player. It doesn't have FM/AM? I wonder if it will connect to XM radio. Check everydetail before commiting. For one How does it transfer MP3's from you computer to the HU HDD? That was one of the biggest faults of the Sony Unit. I could only put MP3's (atrac3) on the HDD from a cd.
