Do I need a mono or 2 channel amp to drive a DVC sub? In other words, do two channels need to drive the two voice coils or does a single channel drive both? What is the typical hook up from an amp to a DVC sub?
you still use a mono amp. The purpose behind a DVC is to give you more wiring options. Just make sure you get the proper sub to match the amp you want to use, so you get the right final Ohm load.
OK. I understand about mono amps. Now help me with amp ratings. Let's say I was going to use a DVC 2 ohm sub rated at 500 watts RMS. If I wire it as a 4 ohm sub, does that change the watt rating?

Wired as 4 ohm load (2 ohm coils in series) the amp rated at 500 wattts mono at 4 ohms will deliver that power. The theoretically the same amp will deliver twice the power if the load change to a 2 ohm load.
Now speaker side. Because a speaker says 500 watts rms, doesn't always mean supply this power to this speaker. I like to say 80% of rating for safety and reliability factoring. If the speaker is rated for 500watts rms for dual coils then the rating typically applies to both coils as one piece. IMHO
