I sure someone has replaced their rear speakers. Mine sound very weak, no rattling or anything, just poor sound quality. Can I just replace the factory Bose with any right-sized aftermarket speaker? For some reason I think that Bose systems are different from "normal" systems. I'm not looking at adding a sub, just replacing the rear 6.5".
I know many people has replaced the rear speakers (6.5" for coupe and 5.25" for FRC and vert) with Infinity Ref. series. You should get a brand new pair on Ebay for around 50$ or so.
Good luck
The rears in a coupe are not 6.5", they're 6.75". You will get a slight sound improvement with a good aftermarket 3-way speaker. The change over is easy to do, all you need is a GM speaker wire harness adapter, so you don't have to cut the stock wiring harness.
Check my sig. I put in Infinities from eBay (Ikesound, I think), got wire adapters and some of those foam cups that fit behind the speaker from Crutchfield. Speakers were about $53 last fall, easy install. The 6.5" fit perfectly in my coupe, but I left out the top screw because it was too hard to get to (it's weird, because you can get the old one out OK). The Blose speakers I took out were POS IMHO.

While GM says the rear speakers 6.75" (coupe only), they are actually an "oversized 6.5". Any 6.5" speaker will fit in an "oversized" 6.5" opening, but a 6.75" speaker will not fit in a regular 6.5" opening.
For what you want to do, the Infinity Kappas (62.5i) are a step up from the reference series. The tweeter is fairly bright and the Kappas are quite efficient. This just means that they will make the most out of the limited power they are receiving from the stock head unit.
Thanks for everyone's help. Sounds like the consensus is that I can replace the rear speakers with 6.5's (even though GM lists the opening as 6.75) using a GM harness (I wouldn't have thought of that -- BIG thanks :D). I'm thinking of going with Rockford Fosgates 6.5 3 ways from Crutchfields. Can anyone compare the Infinity's with the RF's?
good timing ,last night I was puttin in rock. fosgate 3206(from crutchfield) in rear, faded to rear to hear diff. left(stock)& right(2306)was shifting balance from left to right ,the stock bose sounded better ,to verify I had a family memb. listen & they said the same, think Im sending these back, after reading posts here on back speakers not being good ,I found out its hard to beat the stock bose. :skep:
