I just received an 87 Bose stereo I won off of Ebay. All the wiring looks the same with the exception of a red wire coming off the back side of the 86 unit that the 87 unit does not have. I tried hooking up the 87 unit without the red wire, but it does not play. The 86 unit will not play without the red wire hooked up either, so it seems I need to get the wire hooked up on the 87 unit. I know next to nothing about stereos and need to know what I can do to get the 87 unit to play.
What is the red wire? Any and ALL help appreciated...thanks.....James
Re: Differences between 86 and 87 Bose stereo (Steve86)
TTT. Anybody ever swap an 87 unit for an 86? How did you do it? No red wire on the 87 unit. Will not work. Any advice for the stereo challenged out here? Thanks.....
Re: Differences between 86 and 87 Bose stereo (Steve86)
I am thinking that the wire in question might be the power trip to the bose speakers... donno for sure... where in the hell is Kale when you need him????
Re: Differences between 86 and 87 Bose stereo (bogus)
Since the lights, and antenna are working and I'm getting no sound...I'm guessing the red wire goes to the amps...so can I power the amps from another source to get sound???
Re: Differences between 86 and 87 Bose stereo (Charlutz)
I saw that, but still doesn't tell me how I get power to the amps on the 87. It appears power is routed to the amps from the red wire on the 86 unit. The 87 doesn't have the red wire, so I' wondering how I get power to amps using the 87 unit. Has to be a simple way...Thanks.
Re: Differences between 86 and 87 Bose stereo (Steve86)
You are right in the fact that you are not turning on the amp relay which in turn applies voltage to your amps for each speaker. Kind of like a seperate starter relay the old Fords used to allow voltage to the starter motor.
You are going to need to know what wire coming off the back of the radio connects to the amp relay wire. I have an 88 and the amp relay wire is more pinkish in color than red. Nevertheless, your on the right track. Perhaps you can call Dr. Don. You can reach him at http://www.doctordons.com. There will be a number you can call him at. He is the Corvette radio specialist.
Hope that helps somewhat.
