Ideal speaker upgrqade?

Aloha all, I recently purchased a 2003 Z06 and am waiting for it to arrive from the dealer. I had the opportunity to drive/ride in a buch of Z's already and the 2 major things that I don't LOVE about the car are the interior build quality (I know, I know..trite) and the stock Bose system. So I have a dillemma:

I want to improve the overall sound of the stock system big time, but do not want to add weight (as in a huge sub) as I am very fond of the performance aspect of the car. What (if any) component system would I go to to achieve good bass, mids, & highs?

Do I need to go with a sub? If absolutely so, which would be the lightest, good performing choice?

I realize that this may be a very general question and I appreciate any & all help you stereo guru's might be able to provide.

Dave, I am not a stereo guru but.....This is a 3200 lb. car with 405+ HP! If you add 20 lbs. of stereo upgrade you will never notice the performance difference. The car will always make you grin from ear to ear when you drive it hard. Why not upgrade the stereo so as to keep that grin when it is standing still.

there is quite a bit you can do to update the audio, without adding tons of weight.

First, gut the system. Get rid of the factory head and speakers. period.

I would go with a nice pair of seperates up front... CDT, Boston, Focal...

Alpine head unit.

Single 10" sub in the rear with a stealthbox.

And a nice amp to drive it all...

you might add 20lbs, but remember, you are removing 5 lbs or so of Blose junk.

How much $ you got?
I'd go with Focal 3-ways up front (about$1200) and a quality 8" or 10" ($400)in the back in a custom carbon fiber enclosure ($400?). Get a killer 4 channel amp ($1500) and your pick of HUs. Using the carbon fiber will save a lot of weight and so is chucking the Bose stereo. Some subs use a neo magnet (like Aura) and that too will save a lot of weight. Keep us posted. :cheers:

Awesome input guys:cheers:. I have a sponsorship from a local stereo shop and can get all my stuff at cost so I don't mind beefing up the system too much. I can definitely spare 20lbs, I was thinking the system would weigh more like 100lbs with the box, amp, sub combination.

I was planning on Utopia's up front, and now I will definitely go that route. I will look into that Aura sub as well knewblewkorvette. Are you guys using any particular sub enclosure?

Oh also, does anyone know why the Focal components on Ebay go for so cheap? I saw somw Utopia's on there for $7xx the other night. I was thinking they must be refurbished or something as there is no disclaimer, but it'd be nice to pick them up for 7 bills ya know!

I got my utopias for $500 something delivered to my door. Brand new.

Mark up in car audio is crazy.

I think the Focals sell to dealers for $350, then they s ell them for $900-1000.
