Somewhat flat response, excellent midbass properties (for a subwoofer)
Ported >
Incredible low end. Low low drums nearly kick you out of the seat. Much louder than sealed, much harder to locate in the vehicle. But the excellent "midbass" properties are all but gone. It's not a huge difference, but it helps in definition of sound. The SQ out of ported and sealed is identical but for this difference here.
How about building a larger sealed box? It should increase the low end response while maintaining "midbass" and SQ. You'll also get more efficiency from the same wattage.
using a inductor/cap to x-over the sub is a bad idea, it would be added weight because when we are talking about 1000 watts, that would be a LARGE coil. It will consume wattage. Use an active crossover in the amp or before the amp. No wasted wattage :)
