Currently I have 2 12" JBL Gt1281s in a sealed, 1.2 cube per driver box. Total system qtc is around 1.15(shudders). I want to get the qtc lower to around .8 or so, but I'm wondering how much this will actually affect the sound.
To get around .8 qtc I need to build a 3 cube per sub box, and that isn't exactly small. Would the difference in total q really be a noticable change? Now I can hear some overhang, and the low low bass is very muddy. With a total q of .8, would it tighten up noticably? I know I would lose a little output in the 50-80 hz range, but I assume low end would be much better.
I really won't be sacrificing a whole lot of trunk area vs the box I have now...my current box is trapezoidal, so it takes up a lot more trunk space than it needs to. I've been working the numbers, and from the edge of my rear window to the back of the rear seat I have 21 inches deep, 36 inches wide, and 16 inches tall. With that completely blocked off, I still have all of the space from the end of the rear window to the end of the trunk, say 48x16x20 or so. Accounting for 3/4 inch mdf, I should net somewhere around 5.6 cubic feet...then I will stuff the hell out of it with polyfill, hopefully to get an effective Qtc of somewhere around .8 to .81.
I think any improvement will be worth the 20 bucks in mdf.
