Re: Do I have enough power? (knewblewkorvette)
IMO you can never have too much power, but you can easily have too little power. How many guys have you actually heard complain that they have too much power?
Big power gives you more headroom and allows for more flexibility when tuning. Tuning is what turns a good sounding bass section into a great sounding bass section. You can also get a higher S/N ratio because you can run with relatively lower gains on the amp. You will still get big power with the bass peaks and you can turn up the bass control on your source unit if you want an extra distortion-free kick in the pants.

:withstupid: 500 watts instead of 250 watts for the sub isn't going to make it twice as loud or make it hit twice as hard, but it will allow for cleaner, more impactful bass response.
youll get 3db out of doubling the power, ASSUMING the sub would actually be able to reap the benefits of 500 watts. If its hitting its max at near what you have, there wont be a lot of difference.
I am a hypocrite on this post since I believe in alot of power myself. But, since JL made this woofer and they say 250 watts is optimal for the 10W3, who are we to agrue  They DESIGNED this speaker and I'm sure their engineers know what they are doing. Therefore, the amp he has purchased is perfect.
S/N is not as important with subs, the hiss is too high in freq.
JL does state you can go up to 500 watts with the W3 but you will only gain 2 db, possibly more distortion, and shorter life of the woofer

Re: Do I have enough power? (knewblewkorvette)
Its not how loud it goes, its how it sounds when going loud. Lets say a 250 watt amp can cleanly push that sub to 70 DB (without clipping) with an average music source. A 500 watt amp is going to sound more dynamic at the same 70 DB with the same source and you will have more headroom for clean peaks. If you are afraid of damaging the driver at high volumes with 500W then turn the gains down on the amp. You will still be able to tune in extra bass gain while listening at medium volumes by turning up the bass control on your source unit. 500W will provide a win/win situation.
150 watts to the front comps is a [/i]lot[/i] of power. I think that more than 250 watts is needed at the sub for a well balanced system. Doing it right the first time will cost less than upgrading in the future.
