i have read of complaints before here but search tool got me nowhere.
my 04 coupe has distorted bass on it seems both front doors, i have one on showroom with exact same problem yet an order came in for a customer and his is fine.
so how do i find out if its speakers or amp?
everything works fine as far as changer and radio except heavy bass gets distorted, i thought maybe it was some of cd's i ripped which are old stones (mick taylor era 68-72) but i get it on some radio songs also.
we don't have gm's test cd here (imagine that) at my store and i usually do all these type of repairs myself anyway but don't want to order speaks if i need an amp (warranty).
so anyone help me with a test procedure to locate problem?
That is odd. Curious you checked the bass setting on the radio? How loud do you have to turn it up before the distortion happens? Does it happen with CD and radio?
actaully i seem to get noise like a hissing or vibration but it gets worse with bass so leads me to believe its bass?
radio and cd (clean copies or store bought) yes.
not super loud but i can feel air blowing on my pants.
i have everything set at center as far as bass-treble and no eq added as i keep that at manual setting also.
i swear i remember reading this here before i even ordered my car and am somewhat leaning towards an amp as opposed to speakers?
wonder if somehow something gets wet as i see water dripping out directly below speaker area thru the rubber plug on bottom of door...and i wash pretty much every week or two...but that wouldn't cover my test car at store which was only washed for showroom once, so that theory is dead in the water.
I highly doubt it is water. The speakers are sealed very well. The only thing you can do is start replacing pieces of equipment. Is the noise is coming from both front speakers only or the rears also? Even if it is just the front speakers I would change out the head unit first. Someone once told me that there is a Bose processor after the headunit and before the speakers in the C5...I can not recall ever pulling one out though. If there is one I would change that next. I would leave the speakers for last. Since the speakers have their own individual amps at seperate locations the odds are they are not going to break at the same time.
i always leave the frequency controls flat dead center and the eq's also at manual.
actually noise is made on certain low frequencies and i thought maybe covers are vibrating. there was tsb on this quite awhile back but it supposedly was for the bose emblem itself which in my case doesn't move.
but whats wierd is only certain base frequencies but not all base...so thats what leads me to believe its vibration of some sort and its from speaker area (speaker or cover)
interesting turn of events...i had my service dept order kent-moore tool J39916A test cd/cassette kit and testing at home (in my garage under quite conditions allowed me to pinpoint it) sure enough it showed that my front speaker grilles were rattling on certain bass frequencies.
its the speaker grille itself not the bose emblem for which a TSB was issued a few years back when the fastening method for emblem also led to rattles.
too bad as having 5 camaro ss's since 96 and living with its bose and later monsoon systems they too rattled but with a lousy mounting of plastic grilles to speakers were the cause and easily fixed with felt tape.
you would think the vettes would have its flagship stereo setup so this wasn't the case...oh well. too bad but hey it's a 1997 era system... even so for $52k one would think the speakers wouldn't rattle.
I have a question about the stock Bose system. How easy is it to blow the speakers? I like bass, and stock is probably enough for me, I just don't want to crank it up too loud and explode them. I've had an 02 Z for about 2 months and haven't tested the limits of the speakers. Let me know what ya'll think. Thanks.
