I have a 1985 Corvette and the tape player does not work. When you insert the tape the player the player seems to try to play then reverses then stops and ejects the tape. It is not the tape as I have tried different tapes. Anyone have this problem? Repair?
From: Why are there squished peanut butter cups in my underware?
Tape players use rubber belts (looks like a round black rubber band) to control movement of the tape.
If you are good at fixing small things, you could remove the radio, open it and see the old belt that will most likely be the problem.
I get replacement belts from an appliance parts store.
Replacement is best but if a belt is not at hand or easy to find-
I have restored performance on *some* old decks by cleaning and
refurbing the rubber (including the belt) with a rubber revitalizer.
If you're going to be in there, might as well lube all the spindles
and stuff as they get dirty and can cause drag on the mech in there..
Its worth a shot..
Running slow can be a slipping belt too! Or, you might need to install a variable resistor on the circuit board and adjust the speed to be correct. The repair manual shows where to install it.
mine did the same thing - the local chevy dealer sent it out to be repaired - cost about $100 but that was 10 years ago. I'd ditch it and find a cd player.
Thanks for the information. One other question. If I buy one of the Portable CD Player with a tape adapters will that allow me to play CDs even if the tape player doesn't work?
