Gee, you are asking a lot. 1/2 ohm, 500 watts, small chassis. There is only one true solution. In the old days, we used to call these type of amps, "cheater amps". I use them in my award winning white Talon. I run 3 US Amps in that car, 2 are rated at 12.5 wattsX2 and the other 25 wattsX2.
That is at 4 ohms. The 12.5x2 wattage amps are approx 2"X12"X 24" in size, the biggest 25 watt amp ever. In reality, I'm getting 400 watts into a mono 1/2 ohm load or 800 into a 1/4 ohm depending how the system is set up. (different progams on what speakers run, etc.) The 25X2 is "only" stable down to a 1/2 ohm
When I saw these amps demostrated, the rep used the speaker leads to weld/cut pop cans in half
These are the amps you need to get a 1/2 ohm load. Orion is famous for their HCCA amps also. There are NOT cheap though.
Xtant make a really small mono amp rated at 100 watts but it will not get down to a 1/2 ohm.
Your best compromise is the newer class D amps. They are smaller, draw less current, and cost less than a typical class AB amp. Most are stable down to 1 ohm and can put out well over a 1000 watts. The drawback, use only as a sub amp, no mids or highs.
Many manufacturers make these amps, I personally use JBL class Ds.
It pounded! The 50 watt and below class was huge back in the early 90's.
This is what I was thinking about also. Car Audio and Electronics magazine did a review of this amp a few months ago.

I forgot about autotek :o Back in 1991 I had the privledge of messing with the "Hollywood Sound Labs" truck. It had nine of their new tube subwoofers in it powered by autotek amps. Awesome S-10, espically in that time. Too funny that ParkRat had a W5 subwoofer, I thought I was one of very few that had the W5 series.
Mr. Randy,
Ask that drinking buddy if he remembers the Screamin' Eagle since two of the US Amps were custom made by them just for this car.

They kinda look like a heathkit for a car. Not to mention, they are pricey. I saw that they make amps up to 3000 watts + at 1 ohm or 2 ohm....thats insane, and around 2k$...way out of this vette owners' budget.

Yep...the Memphis M Class 500 D is about 10.8"x6.5"x2"...It's rated at 500 watts at 2 ohms and (from the articles I've read) it's suppose to run cool and make rated power...they also have a bridging module that can take two MC500D's and bridge to 1000 watts at 4 ohms...some pretty good prices on them can be found on ebay but I'm not sure if a warranty would be included...
Hey Vetterlatethannever...sounds like you have some hands on experience with Memphis products...how did you like them?
