I've oned a lot of gear in the past, mostly high end like Butler Tube Driver, a/d/s/ dynaudio, diamond audio, etc. I think the JL w0 series is just a fantastic speaker for the money. I've triued the w7 and they are too boomy, dont waste your time.. The w0 is a nice blend of output and mixing with the other speakers.. hits low..very efficient.. see if you can afford and listen to a 12w0. Mounting depth should be average or slightly less for a 12". You could go 10w0 as well, but I think the 12 is worth the added effort to install.
those Pioneers also were just reviewed in Car Audio (or was it Mobile Electronics ) They are ranked great for the purpose (shallow mount) but not up to par with a normal sub in terms of spl.
Yeah I was reading similar articles to the one you mentioned, also reviewing the rest of the subs in the shallow woofer catagory, which was Earthquake, Blaupunked and Lanzar was compaired. They all seemed to come in around the same statistics in low end extention roll-off down below 80 hz. None of them were very sensative due to the inherit "in cone" magnet motor location. Most of the subs in this class mount the voice coil and magnetic assembly more to a center location of the speaker to reduce mounting depth requirements. They're by no means in the same catagory with similar 12" or 10" drivers. What is kind of strange is that Morell and McCauley have been making exquiste drivers that are shallow mount for years way before the recent manufacture craze to make shallow subs. So I dont know what all the fuss is about. The technology has been there for years.

are you mad? Im no big JL fan, but thats a nice sub. "boomy" doesnt mean anyting.. .maybe it was put in an incompetently designed enclosure. Even good speakers can be made to sound bad.
