Does anyone know of a thread or a link to someone re-doing a door speaker panel for a early 84-88 door panel for a 5.25" or a 6.5" speaker? I tried searching the forum without any luck, but maybe I missed something.. I just want to see what other C4 owners have come up with for their fugly original speaker replacement.
Also, what are you all putting up in the dash for 4x6's ?? any suggested brands, or coaxial or seperates plate better?
ALSO..heh....does anyone know the factory wiring harness colors to the 4x6's in the dash, so i can utilize the factory wiring? I dont believe replacing the wire to them would enhance anything....thanks
I put 5.25s in the doors, with their tweeters in the dash. This isn't the best for imaging, but it gets the job done.
Don't you have the bose system? If so, there's no wiring going up there. Or speakers. Just solid plates.
When I get my car back from getting a new rack installed, I'm giong to install door speakers again. I'll get photos, and such, of the mounts I'll make...
I put more work into my front stage than I care to speak of. These cars are not easy to install a system in. I took the door panel off and removed the bose boxes. Then, I took the carpet off the bottom of the door panel cut out the square hole a little bigger (1/8-1/4 inch on all sides) and cut a piece of plexi to fit in the hole. The piece of plexi had a hole cut in it to accept a 6.5" speaker. I then fibreglassed this piece of plexi into the door panel, recarpeted it with new carpet and cut out a round hole. It looks a lot better and you would never know that there was a square hole there. That is the midbass portion of my front stage. Up in the dash locations, I traced the original dash grilles onto a piece of high density fibreboard (MDF's brother on steroids, used in laminate flooring). It was approximately 1/4" thick. I used a 1" holesaw to make a hole for the tweeter and a 4" holesaw to make a hole for the midrange. I mounted the speakers from the bottom and covered the top with black grille cloth. In the dash it looks 100% stock. Be warned though, that it takes a lot of measuring and a fairly small 4" to fit up there. If you can pull it off, it is worth it. You will have a very high, wide and centered sound stage. I used JL Audio XR 3 way components.

are the plates just in there with screws so as i can remove it? I mean, there are quite a number of audio manufactuers that make 4x6 plates that sound pretty good (JBL comes to mind right off the bat.) But a tweeter plate would be great for upwards soundstaging. I dont want to have to put something on the pylon....However, I did have an idead for an SPL meter in a pylon, but thats way down on my list of ideas for my ride. My stereo isnt going to be good enough to measure for a long time...
Im right now in the process of debating which 10" sub to get for my storage compartment sub. Im leaning towards a Brahma 10" DVC.....I read somewhere that one could hit like 147 db with enough UHMPH behind it. Id sure like to be the one with that problem.
Im going to try my hand at fiberglassing a sub box tomorrow, im taking lots of pictures of the project to see where I screwed up at, or where I succeded. Ive been trying to read up on fiber fab threads on a couple of different sites, and mushing all the ideas together...hope it turns out well....
You'd need to do a lot of work to teh car to get 147db out of a brahma 10. You're more likely to get around 130 from it in a sealed box. Still, 130 is very, very loud.
I made plates out of MDF in the shape of the speakr holes, and covered in speaker cloth.
oh i know, but I looked up the price of a Brahma 10 and its $350, way out of my price range.....Anybody could suggest something similar to it without the pricetag?
snoopdan
I did see a speaker in some other audio forum from Resonant Engineering, some speaker they make that has a 4 " cone excersion. Of course, im sure id have to sell my first born for it.
