Sounds like the nylon rod has broken. You can pick up the repair kit from G.M. It consists of the nylon rod attached to the finial end and costs about $25. Once you have removed the unit you can drill out the rivets and replace the part. To remove the antenna, start by removing the wheel.
Then the inner fender. Now you have easier access to the motor. There are about 2-3 bolts holding it to the car plus one big plastic nut at the top of mast. You'll need to wiggle your arm up there to get at it.
The electrical connections are under the trim by the hatch latch and the coax connection is under the carpet behind drivers side shade track. Follow these wires to a big rubber plug that you will have to remove with the wires.
I'm sure your hip will love this project

thnkx I figured it was something like that. I guess I'll change it out with a replacement the next time I buy rims .. The previous owner of the car left in the trunk a "radio shack" harada copy. Its awful looking, I have no idea what he was thinking when he bought it. OH well. I never take my car thru the mechanical car wash anyways.

thnx again.
