(I'm no expert but) I think the defroster lines have too high a resistance value to work properly as an antenna. Plus, the left side should be connected to chassis ground, which I believe would destroy it's receptive ability.
Still wont work. Terry is right about the resistive properties of it. Those heater strips are a carbon and lead mix. Thus when amperage is applied to the grid, it heats up. blah blah blah. im sure you know how it works. compaire to to hooking up chicken wire mesh to your TV for better reception - its not going to work. Nice idea though. It would be a nifty thing if it would work. Maybe application of one of those antenna tapes would be for your liking. They're not too ugly, nor noticeable.. I think even RadShak has em.
I drove around for almost 12 years with my antenna removed while using the rear defroster as antenna (disconnected ground and 12V power) for my radio/CD player in my 80 C3. The antenna center lead was soldered to the defroster mesh (plug connection, keep it short) and the ground of antenna was connected to chassis.
It worked perfectly with good reception and I have done the same for my 92 Bonneville SSE. BTW, the newer cars (like my GTP and C5) all have windshield antennas.,

so you just unplugged the froster and left teh ground side intact, anyone know which is which on a C4
No, no..., you have to unplug BOTH, so that defroster mesh is totally isolated and then ONLY re-connect the antenna center lead to the defroster, while the antenna ground is connected to the car frame!. As i said, I've done 2 cars like that, with good results. Good luck.
does anyone have pics of the windsheild attena installed? can you see it at all? i think one of the vett magazines did this on a C4 and they took out the exterior antenna and bondod over it and painted it and it looks sweeete! know what i mean?

No you tell me... just replaced my power antenna with a aftermarket unit... I need to figure out the proper wiring because the stock unit has 3 wires and the aftermarket has 2 wires... perhaps the antenna relay does the trick for the up and down part... It was a pain, but i think I got it mounted pretty good... has anybody done this mod before ?
How should it be wired ? I have a separate ground hooked up as provided with the new antenna... Just going to have to look it over real good and tesyt continuity I guess...
