Default odd rear view mirror question

Hey everyone,

I just got a vfd (vacuum fluorescent display)for my new set up but the real estate in my center console has been taken up by the slot loading dvd rom and the touchscreen so I'm faced with a problem on where to mount the vfd. One option was to try to sneak it into the hud and see if it will be bright enough to project when bounced off a mirror onto the windshield. Knowing going into this that it probably wont work I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the rear view mirror. From what i gather they are comprised of a semi transparent mirror on the front and behind that, there is the mirror that is adjustable so that it aims the bright lights up at night. So I figure if i can hack away at that and replace the back piece with this display; when on, it will show through the rear view mirror.

Is this theory correct or will i have to purchase a special one way mirror to do this?

Try this experiment with a replacement rearview mirror. You can buy them from WalMart for $11. If it works out, you can hack into your OEM one.

so I take it that you don't have the auto-dimming rear-view mirror in the vette? If you do have that mirror there is no way I would mess with it.
I completely removed the mirror in my white Talon and replaced it with a LCD screen. It can be used with the HU, TV, or if I want to see the cops chasing me, a rear mounted camera that I have mounted in the hatch keyhole

lol

Yeah, it's a '99 so it's not auto dimming. I just realized that the vfd's I ordered from ebay may be to big for this, It may have to wait !
