Default Optima/Battery Tender Question...

I bought a battery tender today. I was surprised to see that EVERY tender I looked at (went to 4 stores) had a statement on the box that said "for use on Lead/Acid batteries only."

I can't believe that you can't put a tender on a Red Top.

Why do they make this statement? Is there an issue with using a tender on a gel-cell? Or, as I am guessing, they are differentiating a lead/acid battery from a dry cell?

I use the one that is made by "Battery Tender" and I have 3 Optima batteries I keep charged with them. No problems. I cannot speak of other battery tenders.

Its just crap to cover their *** if some moron does something stupid like leaving it on a gell cell for too long. Alot of products have retarded warnings on them.. For example, my logitech wireless keyboard has a warning "may cause damage to fingers, and wrists"...so am i supposed to not type??! Kinda like the McDonlads "HOT COFFEE" lawsuit.

Im guessing a battery 'tender' is a battery charger. Ive never heard it called a 'tender' before.

Never trust a trickle charger, even if it says it has an auto feature not to overcharge your battery. I fried a battery with one, oops.
The battery tender has a processor in the chassis (that is why it costs more than a regular charger) that monitors you battery voltage and charges at a slow rate, 1.5 amps. The tender will never charge a dead battery but it will keep a good battery in perfect condition. I leave my Battery Tender hooked up to my Optimas all winter long, no problems ever. I don't even disconnect the battery from the car since it is not needed. Come spring time, the car starts right up and all the car's memory is not lost.

I hate those battery chargers that dont let you overcurrent the circuit. My dad bought one recently I wanted to strangle him. How am I supposed to quick charge the batteries in my TV remote now????!
