Default good sub around the $150 mark?

Hey guys,

The cp project funds are depleting but I still want to have bass. I am replacing the door speakers wiht some cdt 6.5" components and I'm looking for a 10 or 12 inch sub. My requirements would be that it has to have a final impedence of 2 ohms and be able to fit in the rear center compartment stealth box (flush). I was thinking about the 12" pioneer premier spl2000 which i've read great reviews on but I dont think that the stealth box is big enough for that sub. Looking online i've found a company called 'MA Audio', I've never heard of them but they seem to have a pretty robust magnet on thier woofers.

What do you guys suggest? (i will be powering this with a phoenix gold titanium amp [4x75] which is stable at 2 ohms bridged)

MA Audio = Mobile Authority

Just another name change, like when jensen went to "dual"

But for a suggestion, try the Alpine R DVC 12" wired to 2 ohms. I have the same thing in my ride. Its no comp vehicle, but it rattles the mirrors on the side of the car bad enough to where I have to reset them constantly. Not bad for a $100 sub in a sealed 1 cubic foot box.

I'm not planning a comp. vehicle just something that'll hit when i'm listening to TOOL. I'll check out those alpines. thanks

heh, will work great for Tool. for a temp solution you could buy a 8" unamplified bazooka tube for $30 used off of ebay just for a backup solution. Anytime I need extra space in my vette I take out my big box and throw in my little bazooka just for "something". I cant take NOT having some sort of low end. Even for a 10 minute trip.

As for Tool, I heard a remix of a "Sober" by Orbital...its called "Tootled" was sort of odd. Ive just never heard anyone do a tool remix before

I was thinking about something that might bang pretty good and wouild stay out of the way, how about a bazooka tube with the subwoofer in it replaced with something else ?? like a W7 or something huge like that. Would solve the problem of depth easliy. Ive messed around with putting other drivers in my bazooka tube, ya get some interesting results..

I think someone actually sells empty tubes. I bet you could easily make one yourself out of fiberglass and those carboard tubes they use to make concrete footings. I think i'm going to order that alpine instead, i really had my heart set on the pioneer (never thought i'd say that) but this alpine seems like it'll meet my needs.

as far as tool is concerned...THEY ARE THE BEST BAND EVER! :-D

I have a few live bootlegs and everything they've ever released. I have never heard any remix that has done them justice but there is a remix of an APC song that is amazing! If you're into TOOL let me know and I'll send you some of those bootlegs (I had to find someone in Australia to send it to me becuase i couldnt find it stateside) There are a few songs with hawkman from tricky that are just great!

Thanks for the advice on the subs

They're all in the same class really. All of them will sound great for every type of music. I guess I have a problem with the question, and subsequent possible answer to "what sounds better for this type of music" because any driver should play all 'TYPES' of music with no sweat anyways. If not, then the driver type you are using is of poor qualitiy anyway. Or, your mids/midbass is not churning out good either.

besides my vague point, any of those subs will sound great with moderate power (250-500 watts)

Something bugs me about ID's though, i guess its the old 70's JBL stuido monitor powder coating look. But who cares what it looks like in the box anyway. I dont mind it, believe me im no Blinger, Well....as far as stereos go im not too much of a Blinger.

Both the Alpine and the JL models seem non-blingy either. Just good engineering.

Yeah, it was a dumb question about 'this type of music' I guess that is more of a box style question (ported or sealed)

Thanks for the insight.... i'm gonna do some more researched and then order one today before i leave work

Yeah, I was a little put off by the appearance when I bought my IDQ10 many years ago. Once I hooked it up though - wow! Just brilliant sound quality. Supposedly the new ID v3s sound better and are louder than the current IDQ series. ...Now I run an IDMAX, which has a gorgeous basket.

Image Dynamics is one of only a few brands that have won my loyalty for life.

Sealed is more compact, and easier to design. I spent a lot of time building and designing a ported box form my idamx... and its a HUGE box.

I think that he's refering to the fact that alot of people have no idea what an ID is, much less how one sounds.

Yeah, I kinda like being the underdog and having some weird azz brand of subwoofer that no one has ever heard of, just for the shock quality. I remember back in 92 when I saw a 8" Impact subwoofer blow my friends baseball cap off his head at an audio shop. Never had heard of one before, and went out the next day and bought one. Man that was like 9375 subwoofers ago. heheh

One thing that has bothered me, after watching the videos of ID's on World Of Excursion is that their surroinds to really funky things when the sub is at maximum excursion - kind of funky ripples in the surround molding. Check out their video site and see what I mean..

hahaha... thought he was making fun of me somehow...becuase of my 'jl audio' reference :-D but i thought you'd enjoy that.

anyways, thanks you two for the help, i ordered the dvc id sub that kale had recommended. I was going to go with the alpine but i think that it may just be a little too deep for my application.

That's the IDMAX. Its designed to ripple at excursion. So the surround can be the shape it is, without taking up cone area for such a big surround.

Yeah thats what I mean. My coworker has a cerwin vega 15. I listened to his, then showed him my 12" idmax. at about 30% volume he was like "Woah."

...Then I turned it all the way up.

Heh, i havent seen someone use cerwin vega in years. I still see some strokers around though.

I think I spent like 2 hours on www.worldofexcursion.com tonight. That Digital Deisgns 9215 blew up big time, haha, ive never seen a basket smash apart in free air....Kinda fun seeing other people blow up their stuff. The Audiobahn 15 Immortal that was plugged into 120 volts ac wall power was impressive. If you havent checked out the site, its kinda good to see what people are really using. I was surpised to see so many eD owners on there too. Some guy even had a Logitech speaker, which was pretty odd.

check em out
