Raybestos Rotors
Was at my local club meeting Tuesday night. One of our members is an account executive with Raybestos. ( he has a 64 and 72 vettes plus a 38 chevy pick-up )
He mentioned to me that all the Raybestos rotors are now cast in China. The Canadian foundry and McHenery ILL finishing plant were closed.
Raybestos ( NAPA, RockAuto, Walker, Pep Boys, Carquest) rotors prices are going UP do to the shortage of scrap metal and cost of shipping.
Fronts about $30-38, rears $30-35 retail depending on store.
Now here is a kicker. The 2008 Summer Olympics are in Beijing China. All manufacturing within 200 km of Beijing will be shut down two months prior to the Olympics and the 3 weeks during the Olympics so the air quality during the Olympics is improved. Then it will take 2 months to get foundries and manufacturing plus shipping back up and running
So that means there will be 5 months next summer when manufactured products out of China will be in short supply.
Raybestos is renting warehouse space to stock up on products to cover that 5 month lapse. Not just rotors, but brake pads, oil filters etc.
In short, stock up before next summer on what you might need for a 4 to 6 months or brake rotors. Not just Raybestos, most of the BBK rotors also come from China.

Sad we can hardly cast a rotor here in the USA anymore. We worry about pollution as the Chinese bury the earth in it. Didn't know pollution stopped at a countries boundary. Manufacturing takes technology and innovation with it. Wonder what high tech job all the employees got after being canned at Mc Henery IL.?

Bummer. I just got a set from Rock Auto a couple weeks ago. Still Canadian, I guess I got some of the last. They were very nicely made, and in the low $20s each. I thought I had found my new source, but not if they're going Chinese.

Where are you going to use them all with your slowed down wussy schedule.... The advantage of being on track every weekend or every other weekend is it doesn't give you much time to go over in detail your finances. Don't feel bad, I will need to back off soon here too.

Mebbe naive, wishful thinking, but ...
1) is there a North American source still in business?
2) What's it worth to us to have a US/CDN source?
I for one, would pay a premium for casting/metalurgy that I could count on. ... dunno how much, tho ...

I have not been to Beijing since '04, but I understand why. The air quality in Beijing is awful. They add over 1,000 new cars a day to the streets. When the USOC came to visit Beijing before they got the Olympics, they shut things down to make it look better. It did not help much. The whole country is a toilet. There is zero regard for polution.
My company was located in the Oriental Plaza, a modern high rise with several embassies and Fortune 500 companies, and the water was not potable.
They don't want all the manufacturing jobs in America.... just most of them.

Very true..... Bottom line, its the American consumer that dictates the standard of living for labor here. Its an unfortunate reality when one's stock portfolio and/or pension/mutual fund's expectation of stock performance compels companies to reduce their costs and increase/maintain profits.
We as consumers brought it upon ourselves. We sit here complaining about rising costs, the diminishing/lack of manufacturing and the recent rise of Chinese made goods appearing in our market place. We discuss how technology and innovation has made manufacturing better but not one word on how our spending habits have made it possible for this to happen.
