go as light as possible (ie Aluminum if you have the funds), and get axles and tires rates as high as possible. Just because you can FIT everything you own into a trailer does NOT MEAN the tires/axles can carry it......trust me on this one!
And if you don't have one, get a weight distributing hitch (even if you have a dually)

I have an '04 F-250 6.0L and I tow a 28' Pace with no problem. I got the GT package with all the upgrades and found a good deal off www.racingjunk.com. I do recommend a good weight distribution/sway control setup (www.equalizer.com). I also put some Firestone airbags and gauges in my truck to help things out. Everything else is stock.
Good luck with your search.

Make sure it is a dove tail (rear end slopes downward). As it is with extra ramp extensions its a bit of a trick not to take the nose off when getting in and out!
I have a 24' Carson Racer Deluxe.
Can't seem to find a good picture of my trailer, but here is one from Carson's website to see dovetail.
You will likely have to add additional tie down points since most that come with the trailers are too far outward from the car.
Call around on pricing. 5 different dealers with the same trailer will come up with 5 different prices!
I would search used. You can get one all decked out for the price of a new hollow shell...

I agree that the minimum should be 24".
E-track in the floor and walls will make life easier.
External lights and a 35 amp service is nice. Look into also having 12V lighting for quick 30 seconds visits inside at night.
I added an optional foot in height on mine and it was well worth it.
A transition plate is nice to have as it allows smooth rolling between the door and the trailer floor. A proper measured piece of wood can suffice if you want to be creative.
What kind of car are you hauling, does it require a winch?
Do you want roof access, if so you need to reinforce it so it can hold weight.
For a few dollars you can have it wired for A/C should you ever want to add a unit in the roof.
Will you have a generator, if so consider a side compartment to house it.
Like adding mods to a car, the list can sometimes be endless.
What is your budget? You'd be surprised how many things you can install.
Don't ask me how I know.
If you buy a toter home and stacker you can save money on lodging.
