Default "Remove key, wait 10 seconds"????

What is this telling me? I bought a 2001 C5Z track car and just had the rack rebuilt. First time I turned the car on after install, I get this message. It doesn't go away, buy if I push the reset button It will disappear for 2-3 seconds so I can see the DIC info.

I'm guessing steering rack position sensor or plug went bad? It's the only thing I changed before I got the message.

This is a security system message.
Probably a dirty chip on the key.

I don't think it has anything to do with the rack, it's a column lock issue.

I can get the same message. My car has had the dealer code fix as well as the mechanical spoof from the Corvette club in Texas for the column lock issue. The only thing that stops this message from appearing is if I remove the key before I turn off the power kill switch and then put the key back in the ignition only after turning the power kill switch back on.

Park the car on any incline and that will happen too

Just about everytime I turn the power switch back on my 02z track car I get this message. I plan my start ups now around "pulling the key and waiting 10 seconds".

Same here. I get it even when I don't turn the power switch off. I think it is the column lock also. Sucks, but I live with it.

Thanks guys. I posted in a couple other sub-forums as well and it appears a low battery voltage can contribute to this. I put the battery on a temder for a while and everything works well... for now.

It's good to hear other things that can cause the problem in case it happens again.

It is the column lock. (One of the stupidest things I can think of...)

The problem is that the switches that tell the computer that the column is unlocked are not making. GM did an update to the software, what they did is cut off the fuel if the switches were not made and you were over a slow speed, like 2 mph. This keeps the car from driving with the column locked and killing someone.

Get a column lock bypass kit and you won't have this problem.

Per Tim, column lock bypass from corvettes of Houston (aka corvette world in Dallas) sells a cheap and easy to install solution.

Gotta agree- that's the column lock- there are kits available to remove the column lock and fool the computer into thinking all is good.

My 97 used to get the message fairly frequently. Never had the column lock fail but the message would randomly keep coming up when the car was stopped, even after driving 20 or 30 miles.

Yep, thanks. It's certainly on my radar screen and will get done in the near future.
