Certain persons in the paddock begins to say that McLaren did a mistake to leave the Honda for the Renault.

The pilots tested the new procedure by simulations of stand start after a safety car period. This will be one of the new features of the upcoming Formula 1 season, which will open on 25 March in Australia. Haas and Grosjean have already warned that it will be a carnage because the tyres will cool down. Pilots will be required to place themselves on the grid in the order in which they were before the start of the SC runway... The search for the show.

Today last testing day before Melbourne, the engine sound, the F1 fever, I miss a lot, it's time !!! Oui oui oui (yes...)

Helmut Marko estimates that the RBR 14 is slightly ahead of Ferrari in the Catalunya tests. Hamilton also seems to think that RBR has taken a big step forward, but he says absolutely nothing about the performance of his W09, just that there is still potential to unlock in the Mercedes. In fact, the W09 has never been pushed to the limit during these tests. Mercedes has tested its reliability a lot without never breaking. Melbourne's Q3 will tell us more.

The last front wing of the RS18, the same will be on Melbourne track ; it looks like the Ferrari's

Total of laps by pilots, team and engine manufacturer during the 2 Catalunya testings. Mercedes has joined a lot of informations, the only team that exceeded 1 000 laps. a week end of race is 700 km, so 1052 laps of a circuit, aproximately, so you can see, the Stuutgart manufacturer was really the only able to do that, despite the bad forecast for beginning the testing.

Nb Tour = # lap

Adding to those numbers, average number of laps per car, for the different engine manufacturers:

Merc: 857
Honda: 822
Ferrari: 803
Renault: 725

That 2nd result is most interesting, and also interesting to look at the average number vs. the high and low for each engine supplier. McLaren really brought Renault down, as did Haas for Ferrari. The Force India number didn't hurt Merc as bad, since the works team ran far and away the most laps.

with your analysis and I'm very annoying for McLaren but also for FI, I think the optimization has reached its limits and there, money is needed to continue the arms race. So far, FI has done more than the maximum with the minimum, as the Lotus team did in the past. Mallya's delicate judicial situation will begin to weigh heavily on the structure, and FI is also in talks with buyers, this kind of thing that causes a blur in the motivation.

Last point, Sauber, I am not optimistic for them, the work of Vasseur will be like that of Renault: a hard work, ungrateful, invisible to harvest in 3 years.

These cars seem to be making a cacophony of sounds this year...either that or microphone tech has improved.

A little OT, but here ya go....
For those not going to the race, be sure to watch Corvette Racing at the 12 Hours of Sebring next Saturday:

10:30am-12:30pm (L) - FS1
12:30pm-3:40pm (L) - FS2
3:40pm-6:00pm (L) - See Streaming schedule
6:00pm-11:00pm (L) - FS2

The C7.R should do well there.

The track is an absolute beast; very hard on machinery and men.
Many European teams come over to run it with the idea of using the experience as a shakedown of the new cars.
The saying goes, "If a car can survive the 12 Hours of Sebring, it can survive the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Here's the tire allocation for Melbourne. As in 2017, and here in Melbourne there is an obligation to put on at least one set of Soft or Super-Soft tyres during the race if it takes place in the dry. Mercedes, McLaren and Williams have opted for the most aggressive strategies with 9 sets of US tyres, the softest compound in Australia, for their pilots.

By Pirelli :

The choice to only bring 1 set of Softs is interesting by Hamilton, Sirotkin, and Grosjean. I guess Hamilton did say the US was the best tire Pirelli have ever built at the first test of it last year, but still. If that thing lasts even 1/3 race distance, Pirelli/FIA/Liberty/whoever writes the request for tires are being dumb and annoying. I'd love for that tire to be a 5 lap special, so if you start on it, you're committing to a 2 stop strategy, or a 1 stop with a really long stint on a slow tire.

Why The Ferrari F1 Team Has The Power To Veto Series Rules

"Here’s the veto story, as Todt told it to Motorsport.com:

“It is something I was curious about, because when I joined Ferrari in 1993 I tried to understand what was the story behind it. And the story behind it was simple.

“Enzo Ferrari was the founder, and he was very isolated in Maranello compared to all the British teams. He was alone and you will remember, in the 1980's, Ferrari was the only full car manufacturer of engine and chassis.

“And he was facing private teams, like Williams, Lotus and McLaren, that were all using the same engine. If I remember it was a Ford Cosworth engine. So he got that [veto] in his discussions to implement. ..."

Interesting.

It's still surprising Bernie and company would have originally gone along with the Ferrari veto.
I don't know of another instance in racing or sports where a single team can control the rules.

Because without Ferrari F1 would have languished.
