Chit! I just pulled the trigger on 18" wheels and am getting R888R's mounted. Oh well, hopefully they are an improvement over the stock MPSS. They are definitely cheaper.

they are very finicky about pressure. They were by far my least consist laps compared to yoko, and sc2 and and Pss. They have better average lap speeds than pss- barely- but definitely less consistent.

Eventually i I just learned that it's better to run them a few psi low than high. I aim for 34 hot max so if they hit 35 I'm still okay. At 36 they get finicky. At 37 they're way down on grip.
I also run 30 min sessions so I probably have a bigger range. I normally do one 70% lap halfway through to save the tires if I do a full session.

Surprised by this info.

I don't have a the wealth of track experience you guys do however.

But I did track my R888s about 5 times and although I haven't yet tracked the R888Rs they sure stick better on the round-abouts and what not.

do you need to do anything different to get the 15% on top of the rest of the discounts?

theyre probably 1.5 sec slower than cup2 despite being 30mm wider up front. Think of them as a cheaper PSS that doesn't overheat as fast but wears quicker on the street.

Always appreciate getting feedback on new/unknown tires.
Now would someone please compare them back-to-back with NT01s for me?

I've got about 3 sessions left in my R888Rs and then I'll be switching over. Maybe I'll just ship them to the track and go back to back.

i find it weird that the old nt01 should be better than later model tires.

888R just have too much tread. Look at them, I bet 20% of the contact patch is lost to those stupid treads. And even worse, they aren't focused on the inside- they go all the way the outer shoulder unlike most other tires.

vs

or even PSS:

That would be a cool comparo. How many sessions did you get out of your R888Rs and how bald is bald? Should be running till cord right?

Also, they don't come in the same sizes though. At least for what I was looking for.

I got a full day at COTA so about 1.25hrs there. I probably got about 2 hours in at ECR. I still have tread on them though. I'm hoping to get an MSR day out of them and call it good.

Can you run them bald? Are there wear indicators/dimples on them somewhere?

There are bars just like any other tire but from what I understand, the general consensus in track tires is run till they cord from what I've heard. Treads are for wet grip. Yeah you will probably heat cycle then before cording if your wear is even.

General pattern is that track tires heat cycle out, just getting slower and greasier with every passing day.
All the while taunting you that they still have a TON of tread left...
Exception seemed to be the old Toyo RA1... when you saw sparks, I guess they're finally done.
NT01s might be similarly durable?

That seems to be the popular opinion. Hoping that's what happens for myself. I'm on my first set now, so we'll see. I just used a set of R888R's, and they heat cycled out pretty quick, IMO. There was still a lot of tread left and they were darn slippery.

funny part is Toyo and Nitto are owned by the same parent company, they are also both 100 TW.
ive always assumed because of this the NT01 and R888R is the same tire with different tread patterns.

R888R is like 1/4-1/3 tread voids. I don't get it. (and they still suck in the rain)

When the NT01 came out, Toyo had been phasing out the RA1. It was widely rumored that the Nitto was the same carcass and rubber, just in a different tread.
They do behave the same...
Funny thing though, I'd been running RA1s on my M3, and then they were discontinued. Toyo brought them back, but they seemed different... the old ones would just get quicker until they were gone, but the new ones cycled out at about the same pace as their peers.
