Default Braided plug wires

I have a new set of braided wires for a 67 bb and checked them and they are showing 75,000 ohms of resistance. why is this and will this be a problem? Regular wires read 20,000 or less. Do I have a bad set? They have been installed and don't seem to be a problem but don't want to give up any power.

Are they Lectric Limited wires? They're pretty delicate - don't know whose base wire stock they're using these days, but we went through three complete sets of new Lectric Limited (non-braided) dated repro wires (24 wires) to get eight good ones before judging at the Orlando Regional back in January.

as much as I like Lectric Limited and many of their products (especially their wiring harnesses), let's just say I have no faith in their dated spark plug wire sets for reliable performance in continued daily use . . . if that's where the original poster sourced his braided wires . . .

GM stills sells them under PN 8912284 with a list price of $126.22. You can buy them for half that (plus shipping) at GM Parts Direct.

If you befriend the parts guy at your local Chevy dealer, he might be able to come close to this when shipping is considered.

They are for both transistorized and conventional ignitions.

WOW, that was the tip of the day! I've bid on a few of those on ebay and never won... all went for $120+.

Went to gmpartsdirect.com, but couldn't verify that part number 8912284 is also the one for my 73 454. Any clue?

I didn't see in your post where you were necessarily concerned about correctly dated plug wires that would pass judging, so maybe you are only looking for something period correct. Here is what I did when my GM replacement braided wires started going bad. I bought a Taylor plug wire kit and threaded the 8 mm wires through the braided sleves, used the GM plug end boots, and the Taylor distributor cap boots under the shielding. It looks period correct - the 8 mm wires are black and not that obvious - and it's been dead reliable. The trick to getting the wires in the braided sleeves is after removing the GM wires, longitudnaly compress the braided sleeve, which has the effect of increasing it's diameter. The wires can be carefully worked down the length then. The braiding will end up being slightly shorter than before (larger diameter wires) but there were a couple of inches of bare plug wire showing at the engine end anyway.

PN 8912284 is shown in my 1973 Chevrolet parts book as the functional replacement for 65-67 SHP 396 and 427, 67-68 427, and 70-71 SHP 454. It is described as 8 glass interbraided spark plug wires and 1 coil high tension wire with nipples and clips. I installed these wires on my '66 BB. They have the '67 style ends that are secured under the valve cover bolts, v. the 65-66 style that clip to the plug shields. They are not dated and I don't know the manufacturer, but they are in a Delco box.

PN 8909665 is listed for 70-74 454, but is no longer made. It is described as 8 glass interbraided spark plug wires and 1 coil wire. No mention of end clips or nipples.

If you stop by the parts counter at your local Chevy dealer, I suspect you'll be told that PN 8912284 is the functional replacement for all 65-74 BB Corvettes.
