Default Solid Axle Commission ?

If your buddy has asked you to find him a 57 and you spent 2-3 weeks calling dozens of ads and talking with tons of people and finally found and negotiated a good price and arranged shipping so basically all my friend has to do is write a check and turn the key. What would that be worth? My brother-in-law says 10% of the final documented amount. What do you guys think?

Sounds fair but that should be agreed on before you start the search.

Whoops, I guess you are right about that one. It should have been discussed. He told me to find one and then he went out of town for two weeks. I guess I would have told him, "this is gonna cost you" after a couple of days of researching... but he was out of reach. I would never finish the deal without telling him the truth, and giving him an option to either go through with this or find one on his own. I am a very honest person and would feel horrible if someone that I admired felt different.

thanks,
livin

I've found that really good friends don't charge one another for something like this. You do him a favor, and somewhere down the line he does you a favor - that's what friends do. If he not really a "friend" compute how many hours he spent and then attach a per hour dollar amount, $50 an hour, $60, $75 or whatever is appropriate for the area of the country that you live

Put it in the "What goes around comes around" catagory.

Brother in law owes you one but not necessarily a monetary reward.

There are so may stories that could be told. Here's one..

A long while back (1974), I found a nice '66 Mustang Convertible for a friend. It was very, very nice and the price was $475.

A few years later I ran into him and he bragged about how he had not spent anything on the car but sold it 6 years later for $4700 ! (did he offer a share in the profits? -- no)

I felt pretty bummed because it took a lot of work for me to find that car for him and I thought even a hundred bucks would have been a nice gesture.

--------------------
Well, in 1998 this guy calls me from out of the blue and tells me his dad had passed away and would I like to buy his dad's old Corvette for $16,000 ?

Turns out it's an all original (except for one carb) 1967 427-400hp car. I told him it was worth way more than that and he said, "I know, but we're friends and I know how much you like old cars".

My brother ended up buying it.

Now, let's see if my brother ever shows HIS appreciation when he sells that car?

(no, I don't think he will either )

and these are the same kind of things I am thinking.

I would buy the car myself for what he is going to pay, pay 5000 dollars for the correct 245 horse 2x4 engine and complete correctly dated #'s matching set-up that I have ALREADY found and sell it next summer for a lot more than 10% profit!!!!

decisions, decisions, decisions..........

I agree. I wouldn't expect to be paid anything for helping a good friend, but I know most my friends would offer to pay ( knowing I would refuse). I guess it all depends on your relationship with your friend. If he's a really good friend, don't worry about it. If he's just an acquaintance/friend, let him know how many hours you've invested and that you want to be compensated. If it's a super deal on a super car, forget all the above babbling and keep it yourself.

I've located cars for a lot of friends over the years and never charged them. They usually remember me when it counts. But I was a little upset when a friend flipped a car for a nice profit in less than two weeks. I no longer consider him a friend. Only burned once.

You're a good friend. But if he decides to flip the car anytime soon, I would be the first in line for a cut.......and let him know that ahead of time.
