1966 alternator date code ?
The first digit would be calender year. Second digit is the month and the last two are the day of the month. For example, 6E12 = 1966, May,12.
Y=year
M=Month
DD=day of the month
example: 5B21 = Feb 21,1965
the month codes run as follows:
A=Jan, B=Feb, C=March, D=April, E=May, F=June, G=July, H=Aug, J=Sept, K=Oct, L=Nov, M=Dec
"I" is not used.
for a May '66 car you probably want a unit dated March or April of '66 but I believe NCRS actually allows up to a six month time frame back so you may be able to get away with a date code as far back as approx Dec. '65 but i'd try to find one closer if possible.
For an April dated alternator the code would be 6Dxx, where "xx" is the day.
I think you should look for anything with a 6Bxx, 6Cxx, or 6Dxx. Depending on the build date of your car in May, you may be able to find an early dated 6Exx unit too.
hope this helps and I hope they didn't change all the dating code info from '65 to '66 or else this is all wrong.
I don't know the normal time frame to allow from the date of the alternator and than allowing transportation time from the alternator production factory to the car production line and than the normal time it sat on a shelf until it was picked up to be installed on the motor but I'd figure maybe about 2 weeks minimum give or take?
To be safe I'd find a unit that is dated a month or two prior to the build date of the car and you should be safe.
Do you know the build date of your car? if not, post the last 5 #'s of your VIN and we can look it up for you.
