Default rear spring replace

I know I'm seen some tips on the forum about replacing the rear spring and what needed to be done to make sure the rear cover isn't stressed after installation. Can't find it now in a search of threads. Would appreciate any advice/tricks in centering and tightening the rear bolt plate to make sure it's not stressed. The cover has been replaced once by a previous owner since it part number 464910 (replacement) and I don't want to do it again. The Shop Manual just says to torque to 55lbs and you're done but I remember something more being said here.....just not what!! .......thanks, dave

Do not torque it until the full weight of the car is resting on it.
There should be a pin to center the spring on the diff cover.

Put the weight of the car on the spring before torquing it. This helps to straighten the spring and puts less stress on the housing.

When my buddy and I did my rear end swap, we used 2 jacks, one on each end of the spring to load it up. Then placed jack stands under parts of the frame, under no load so we felt safe crawling under the car. Rant hem down with the impact, set light, then got them "about that tight" with the hand wrench.

If you try and seat the spring unloaded, you will strip the threads out of the mounting boss on the rear cover.

or worse, you will snap off one or more of the "ears" - more likely and a real do-over . . .

I replaced my spring when all I had was a Chilton's (sp?) guide. It said to torque the bolts after the car was on the ground. THANK GOD!
