Default What is this called....

Took the body off Saturday and while removing all the shims I found two cushions that I need to replace. In front of the rear wheels on the frame gussets, there is a cushion about 2 1/2" tall and the diameter of Sweet Sixteen powdered donut. What is this called? I want to order the right thing.

This doesn't sound correct. You got a pic?

Maybe. I'm going to take a pic tomorrow. It was on a triangle piece of steel (gusset) that is right in front of the rear tires. The triangle piece of steel has a whole in it and is welded underneath the frame connecting the side and back of the frame. I'm thinking a body mount went there.

Maybe the Pinion Cushion mount right in front of the rear carrier in the center. Has two donut like cushions (upper and lower).

If you mean the two in front of the crossmember in the pic below, they are additional body mounts.

It almost sounds as though she is talking about the snubber on the underside of the kickup above the tires??? 2-1/2" high!!!

Default Here's a picture of what I'm looking for...

Here is where the rubber "cushion" was. Yes, I have a rust problem. I'm having it fixed.

Default Body Mount

The 63/64 used that area for an extra body mount. Looks like there was a mount there at one time. It should be noted in your Assembly Manual. Some of the 63/64 guys should be able to verify this. Jerry

My guess would be Bubba welded that in to help support the rusted area. These are not present on 63's but perhaps the corner gusset was added for 64.

The corner gusset was added somewhere in the middle of the 64 model year. My early 64 does not have it, but it's in the AIM. I don't remember the release date. The standard suppliers have the correct cushion for this mount.

When ordering a body mount kit, make sure you specify all the mounts you have due to running engineering changes that took place during the year of manufacture.

The corner gusset was added in April of '64 after this was found to be a weak area on the '63's. The correct gusset had a raised lip of about 3/4 inch on the inside edge so this is one bubba definately installed after the fact. There is a body cushion assembly available for this area for around $20. You can also buy the gussets if you want to keep them. Make sure you add it to your order if you intend to order a kit for the '63 because it won't come with it. My early '64 doesn't have the gussets and I've thought about installing them to cut down on the flex I experience at the door posts during "takeoff"...

If you look closely at the picture, you can see what is left of the raised lip on the ends of the gusset where it meets the frame and the crossmember.
Looks to be an original to me, but it should be replaced along with the rust repair.

That is some serious rust damage. "Old Blue's" frame was not near that bad when I replaced it in '91.

An attempt to support a sagging floor pan maybe??? Were there any glued on rubber donuts on the crossmember towards the center (between the crossmenber and the floor of the crossmember) when you pulled it apart?

No. I didn't see any. I'm thinking about just putting rubber donuts there when I replace the gusset.
