Default "RE-DISCOVERED HISTORICAL MARKING

I know this has been posted and I think it has to do with Job #. While I'm taking my dash apart I noted chalked on the driver's side support cross member (for the cowl) the following #: 9 1 5 2. Is this the Job # or body #? The body tag has A 3690 which is an AO Smith body; so, this must be the Job # right. Reading Noland Adam's book he says the Job # could have the same # assigned to both coupe and convertible.

Just curious.

Thanks!

Jim

I am not sure anyone has figured out exactly what it denotes, but it is common on AOS bodies.

Default I would be inclined to think it's might be something else

As far as I know, and have read about ( including Nolan's ) books, the job number never exceeds 500. Once that number is reached, they go back to # 1 and start over again. Here is where the Job number was found on one of my Corvettes during a restoration. The same # was also scribbled on outside of the rear bulkhead next to the fuel tank, and on the engine side of the passengers footwell.

Thanks Stepinwolf,

The # 9152 appears on the front face of that bar (didn't think to look on top of that bar)...will do tonight.

Thanks!

Panhead,

Boy, is that a familiar view! My # is exactly where yours is written but it has this 4th digit, what appears to be a 2.

Thanks!

The 4-digit number on the face of the bar is the A.O. Smith job number; they used a different system, unrelated to any St. Louis numbers or the body number on the trim tag.

JohnZ,

Thanks for that insight! AO Smith Job #9 1 5 2 it is! I was reading in Noland Adam's book where the identical # could be on a coupe as they kept their job #ing separate. Interesting notation.
