Default Installing Carpet...

I got the jute padding put down nicely and am now laying out the carpet to figure out what fits to what..

First off, how form fitting is this suppost to be? I want the carpet to hug the hell out the the wheels wells and just look tight, but it seems like that is NOT possible.

Second, when dealing with the luggage stop, wheel well pieces what goes over what and under what, and what is preferred to be cut?

Default Carpet

i just finished the carpet in the '66 and the best thing that I can tell you is that the bound edges will show when you are finished. If this makes sense to you. Look at the back, behind the seats, if the large peace that covers the flat has bound edges then it goes in after the wheel covers. The thing works out to where there are no cut edges to show when you are compleat. Firedog

Default Carpet Install

Mike,
I did my 65 a few years ago, but like the prior post stated all the bound edges go in last. I started with the wheel wells, there was a fair amount of trimming to get them tight, even used a heat gun in a couple places to get them to lay down flat. Fit them dry before you try to glue them in. I think I did the luggage stop next, if you have a convertable. Then I did the back of the luggage area, then the floor. Now you can stand back and admire your work. Then you can do the front, after you learned all the tricks in the back. Take it slow and it's not so bad. Good luck with your project.

That does help.. I have the jute padding in, but can't seem to get the wheel wells to lay down perfectly.. It seems like in order to do that the material would have to stretch. When I try to lay down one section another part bubbles up. Maybe it will be different once I cut and glue, but I REALLY don't want to start that until I say ok that's perfect. And the one area I am really having trouble with is where all the pieces in the back meet up by the quarter panels. It's hard to vision where to cut etc etc..

And how much of this 3M stuff should I use? I been saturating the jute with it, but am scared it will seep through the carpet if I use as much.. god help the next guy who takes this stuff out.. probably will be me actually.

Mike we used 3M spray adhesive (08088; some use the Super version) to do the jute and carpet. Picked it up at O'Reilly or NAPA. Spray both sides as instructed wait a few minutes til it gets tacky and then mate surfaces being careful to align them. You get a little slack time for refitting but not much.

Gluing the jute over the wheel wells was a challenge. Line up the cut lines carefully and push the pad into the angles. If you have a helper (a really patient spouse helps a great deal) it's easier to hold things down though usually when you press the pad or carpet it's going to stick.

When working the front pieces we glued a small section at a time working from the firewall to the luggage stop. When you do the driver side, line up the gas pedal area by inserting the screws up thru the bottom and holding the carpet in place with wing nuts (spacer should be in place beneath the carpet. Be real careful in the rear console area. THERE IS NOT MUCH SURPLUS CARPET IN THIS ARE. Others will vouch for this!

Good luck. Patience, patience, patience, for this job.

I was wondering if you use something like the heat and sound stuff(dynamat), that would replace the jute? That stuff seems a lot easier to install.

I am using dynamat xtreme.. easy to install.. tooke time, but it was easy, but I opted to use the jute as well, for that slight "cushy" feeling under the carpet.

How much dynamit did you wind up using? You're install really came out nice. Do you have the seats back in yet? I'd like to see a pic of the compete install when you are done.

I used about 2 bulk packs.. you can get them off ebay for $125 per bulk pack. Audio stores sell it for $250. I will post pics as soon as I am done with my carpet tonight.

Finally got the carpet in.. and the slice on my finger was almost worth it. Here are some pics. It didn't come out EXACTLY like I wanted but it's better than it was. And only took 10 hours today lol. Still lots of little trimming and finalizing but done for the most part.
