hesitation/stutter at 70 mph
I drove the 67 to work today. Blue sky, 70 degreres, the car was running great. wind in my face. If you gotta go to work, this is the way to do it!
Left work and was driving home on the interstate when I noticed the speedometer bouncing back and forth between 60 and 70 although rpm was steady at abour 3k. Then I realized the car was stuttering as well, kind of like driving into an intermittent head wind. But the engine seemed strong with no miss. When i got off the highway everything was ok except the rpm at idle was about 600-700 and it took a little more gas when releasing the clutch to keep from stalling.
Does this sound like a clutch problem??? I'm more of an assembler than a mechanic. I put in the rebuilt engine about 500 miles ago with new clutch assembly.
Any ideas guys and gals??

The intermittent surge sounds like an ignition problem. If the speedo still flutters when you cure the ignition problem, replace the plastic gear on the trans end of the cable. :smash:

If the clutch were slipping the RPM would change and the MPH would remain constant.
Q: Were you going 60-70? at 3000 rpm? Or was it just the speedo?
1)Then I realized the car was stuttering as well, kind of like driving into an intermittent head wind. 2) But the engine seemed strong with no miss.
Was it #1, or #2?
everything was ok except the rpm at idle was about 600-700
What is it normally?
Got to :smash: out the facts.

My 65 396 Vette stumbled at high RPM and it was the sparkplug mesh shielding wire that clipped to my sparkplug head shield that had come loose.

Thanks for the thoughts on this . I have to go to Chicago on business for a few days so I can't jump into it until next week.
Rat, there was no "miss" in the engine but the but the whole car felt like it was in a rocking chair and the speedo was bouncing to the rythm. It's hard to explain but I've never felt it before. I'll spend some time on it when I get back and I'll let you know what I find.
Thanks.
John
