I was in a good mood today because, I knew that my bumpers would be at my house when I arrived home from work. When I pulled into my driveway, I saw the box that my bumpers where shipped in and then I got very angry!! UPS just threw the box on the ground, the box was laying on its side and one of my rechromed front bumpers was sticking out of the box!! WTF!! I immediately called UPS and they told me that they never had a complaint against its driver and kind of ignored my rant. I took a picture of the box and then looked the bumpers over. They appear to be okay but, I will check later because, my older son has a baseball game to attend. I will let you guys know how my bumpers are.
Been there before. In my case a cylinder head was sticking out of the box complete with cracked guide and bent valve. Don't kill the driver - could have happened at any point in the process - your bumpers probably went through several sorting facilities being unloaded and reloated each time. Good luck
My last dozen or so UPS deliveries were left on the doorstep with no ring of the doorbell. There is someone home at my home at all times and things are just left at the door. This has caused a lot of problems as several times the items were left there all night in the rain.
UPS is not my favorite service and that is too bad as they used to be very good.
You really can't blame UPS. I mean, we know they totally abuse our packages.
Having this knowledge, the guy that packed the bumpers maybe should have made a little extra effort to avoid the bumper arrival hanging out of the box.
You have basically two shipping options, but many bumper options.
Had a Fed-Ex delivery a few years ago that could of turned into a disaster. Was waiting for a substantial IRA transfer check that was suppose to arrive the next day. When it did not arrive the following day, I paniced and called Fed-Ex and the source that the check was shipped from. Fed-Ex insisted it was delivered and signed for.
A guy who owned the vacant (for sale) home next to us, came over and said he found my Fed-Ex delivery stuck inside the screen door.
So it is not just UPS that screws up, and why they offer insurance.
paid fed ex about $25 a month or so back to overnight check to pay for 2000 c5 . guaranteed next afternoon delivery,it didn't get there . seller called noon the next day wanting to know where his money was ,it got to him about four that day,one day late . called fedex about their guarantee and was told'' sorry, it wasn't our fault'',and charge was still $25 . so i guess some guarantees don't mean anything .
John, I agree, "that is why they offer insurance" but think about package delivery insurance:
These companies as well as the Post Office tell you "I will ship your package to Off-the-Wall Arkansas for X dollars, but for Y more dollars, I will sell you insurance to make sure your package doesn't get lost, just in cast I don't do a good job and I mis-deliver your package to Mosquito Knee Tennesee instead!"
It just seems that we strike a bargain with the service to deliver a package to a certain destination for a specific fee. But if we really want them to deliver the package just like they initially agree to do, we must pay again. Why can't we get what we pay for the first time?
Our UPS driver is great. We leave the garage unlocked and he puts packages INSIDE for us. If it's something unexpected and we didn't leave the garage open, he checks vehicles to put them in. As a last resort, he'll put them in plastic bags and leave them at the back steps. Once, he even put one inside the gas grill infront of the garage!
I've also had my share of lost and abused packages. I judge the carriers by how they rectify the problems and I have been satisfied with both UPS and FED-Ex. USPS has been the worst in fixing problems in my experience.
Not to take sides, but if something is packed properly the item should take an amazing amount of abuse. A good box, properly packed, goes a long way to protecting the contents. For example, whenevery I've order a computer, I'm almost positive I could drop the box off my roof and it would survive. Half the stuff I order comes properly packed. The other half comes packed half-...ed. This second half has a random chance of being handled well, in which case it comes unbroken or bounced a few times, in which case it comes broken. I have an aquaintance that has shipped a $100k+ watch with no problem with both ups and fedex.
I checked my bumpers and thank goodness that the replaters wrapped the bumpers really well. The part that was sticking out of the box was the bottom edge of the front bumper. The bumpers were shipped back in the same box that I sent them which was good because I tripled taped the box but with all of the abuse the taped seam didn't hold up. It looked like the box was rolled off of a cliff. I will call the plating guys to complain. John.
I deal with this kind of stuff every day. If you could ever see one of their main air hubs you'd be amazed how awful they handle your packages. It's all speed and cost.
I have a few friends that work for UPS and FedEx and one night over a few beers, they were telling me about some of their coworkers abusing boxes especially the air freight guys. I have been lucky except for today.

Not to change the subject, but who did your bumpers, and how much was it? Did they do a good job other than the packaging?
Spacecoast plating out of Melbourne Florida did all four bumpers plus the front bracket. Everything came out great. The cost was $940.00 including shipping. The shipping was $60.00 to New Jersey.
It is the packers fault. UPS requires that an item be "in a box, packed "in a box". Two boxes! If you choose not to pack them properly and you have damage your insurance claim will not be paid.
A few years ago I ordered a set of wheels from Summit and UPS delivered them with all four rims flat on one side. I sent them back and blamed Summit for shipping the wheels in thin cardboard boxes. Should have been double boxed at least.

Off-the-Wall Arkanasas - I think I passed through there the other day. I've had side pipes delivered hanging out of the box. Sometimes you think it must be a game to see how much they can abuse the stuff.

Your answer is in the above statement."they were shipped back to you in the same boxes that you used to ship them" Were the boxes new when you shipped them? They were obviously used when your plater sent them back to you.I think you should be p!ssed at your plater for not taking care in packaging not UPS.Rember don't shoot the messenger.
A couple of years ago I won a trans on E-bay. Price was fair for shipping considering the wgt. and the guy said he would "crate" it.
Well his idea of crating and my idea are far from the same. The trans was bolted to a chunk of wood at the 2 lower bell housing bolts (so it would not roll around on the floor of the UPS truck). A label was taped to the top of the main case. There was part of a garbage bag over the trans extension "protecting" the rear of it. That was it!
How it ever got to me, and in one piece is beyond me. Although one of the bolts through the wood had been pulled through and splintered that part of the wood, and it did suffer damage on the speedo adapter threads a tad on "something".
Miracles do happen! Maybe the UPS guys took pity on it?
I should not be complaining. Ups, Fed-Ex, and USPS all delived packages today, and they all came in good shape!
