Default Shift Linkage

I have a 63 vert with a 4 speed transmission. I had the transmission rebuilt and it is back in the car. After connecting to the shift lever and running through the shift pattern, the shifter will not move over to engage reverse.

It shifts 1st through 4th without a problem and it was working properly before I pulled the engine and transmission.

I have search previous threads but can't seem to find the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Are you saying the shifter won't even move far enough left to be pushed forward to engage? If it will move left but won't allow you to push forward, it could be the lockout rod contacting the lockout pin in the shifter preventing the move forward. Try unscrewing the shifter ball and removing (or raising) the rod inside and see if it will engage that way. I once bought a lockout rod that was a too long and wouldn't clear the pin to allow the forward movement to engage. At least this is a simple thing to try first. Hope it helps......dave

Yes, the shifter will not move far enough left to allow it to be pushed forward.
I have removed the lockout rod and it still will not move far enough left.

Did you take the shifter itself apart?

Sounds like a simple linkage adjustment is required (aligning the neutral gate slots in all three shifter levers) - the procedure is shown in the Assembly Manual and in the Shop Manual.

So do you:
1) detach the shift rods at the transmission
2) move the rods to allow the shifter to work properly in the neutral position
3) adjust the rod lengths at the clevis pin to reconnect.

I have read the shift linkage adjustment section of the shop manual but I'm not sure I understand it.

Since your 1-4 gears shift okay you probably only need to adjust the short rod under the car which is the reverse. Put the shifter in NEUTRAL and have a helper hold it there or make the spacer suggested in the repair manual to hold it in neutral. This will align the levers on the shifter where the rods attach...(on later model cars the levers have a hole in them so you can put a 5/16 (I think) bolt or rod through the holes to keep them aligned). Make sure the reverse lever on the transmission is forward if it isn't already and then adjust the rod to fit on the transmission clevis pin and the shifter lever pin. Replace the washers and clips to hold the rod in place.
