not flares but tail light mods, a prize for whoever identifies the car to which these hideous (sorry, but even the mods-r-us guys will agree) tail lights come from:
actually, the car and tires and flares looks pretty bad-*** from the rear . . . . aside from the lights
I'm feeling mopar on those lights, doubled up Challenger lights maybe? or maybe something from the Plymouth family?

Hi
This car reminds me of my brothers 1964 Corvette that was "modified" in around 1974....The car was painted "purple haze" color and had a "mural" up front...The guy took off the bumpers and painted the head of a shark sides of a shark...you looked at the front it looked like a sharks head...
I actually talked to the guy that painted the car in the 70s...He doesnt remenber much about painting it he was high of the "Mary J wanna be" and also the "solvents" from the paint fumes...
Needless to say, paint wasnt that good..
Also seen a heavily modified 1960 vette.......With orange paint job and a "mural" painting on the back trunk of a "lunar" space landing on the moon"..He had his girlfriend at the time paint the mural on the back truck of his Vette!!!! artist signed her name "Harmony" back in 1971
Apparently this kind of stuff was "in" back in the day?? 70's?? I dont remnber seeing this much stuff in the 70's however, I remenber **** carpeting on the dash!!!
Not much new to add to what's already been discussed but thought I'd show you my ride I picked up earlier this year. I was a little hesitant at first about the wheel wells and 6 tail lights due to the fact that the rest of the car literally is numbers matching and orginal but at the end of the day...I knew this was the ride for me. The wells and tail lights set it apart just enough to be different...and at the same time the flares are so subtle that some people don't even notice. Not that anyone on this forum would overlook them...

I like all the Grand Sports but the old pictures
of the Grand Sport as it ran in SCCA 1963
before it grew those big fenders....
now that was a cool looking Corvette race car
This 1965 orig. 396ci 425hp vette with flares was always a treat to see back in the 70's at the auto-x's.
If anyone know's where this old car is today, I would sure like to hear from you!

We have been down this road before. I like modified cars, I like stock cars. What I really like are drivers, stock or modified, no offense to collectors and show only. My car has all the typical mods from the early 70's and I like it that way. I also drive it all the time and don't worry about it getting wet in the rain or it may get dinged. If it happens I will deal with it. It's a 10 footer anyway!
By the way. Welcome back Duntov!
My first preference is stock but I've seen several cars flared along Sky65 lines (that keep stock contour below the belt line and a small flare above) that I think look really nice and would probably have a hard time changing them back.
For road racing SCCA used to have a flare rule that the car, as viewed from the side, had to have the same fender openning as stock. That led to some pretty creative flares. Someone on the list has posted a photo of a red coupe that is an exceptional example. If I can find it again, I'll post a link.. If I ever do mine, thats how I'll do it!
Glenn,
Some of us just feel that it is pretty hard to improve on the lines of an original body. I am doing a resto-mod, yet I still replaced the flared body panels with new stock ones. As to the fact that people did it in the 70's, look at the clothes that people wore in the 70's, do you still want to dress like that?
It is not that I look down my nose at flared cars, I would rather just keep the stock lines on my car.
my car came with the can-am flare kit and i think its pretty nice, the body work was done flawlessly and you cant see any lines...look at my pic on the left
