In the archives I have found some info regarding C3 speedo's with the same problem but want to ask the question to some C2 guys. Lately at about 35 mph my speedometer needle begins to bounce wildly (from 100 to 160 mph) and I can hear a roaring in the dash. Is this a cable issue, a speedo issue or other? My Odometer nor my tripometer work, they haven't since I bought the car. The car is a 65', 327 4 speed. Thanks in advance for the advice, Eric
The tach cable in my 66 did the same thing shortly before it broke. It sounds like a lubrication problem to me. Old lube is hardened up or just non-existant anymore. The cable loads up and then lets go bouncing your speedo. Both the tach and speedo cable come out from the cluster end as I understand it. This will require that you slide the cluster out to get your hands and tools in there. Remove the inner cables, you might as well do both speedo and tach. Clean them good in solvent. Check for burrs on the inner cable. Re-lube and reinstall. This is what I would try first.

I had this happen to both speedo and tach..... Might as well get both a new speedo and tach cable and do'em at the same time..... and remember to get two 1/4 x 20 x 6 inch long screws to put in each end of the dash, so you can slide the cluster out and get behind it...... Hey look at it as your first winter project..... Good Luck.....
Roaring noise in dash is speedo head, the brass bushing is siezing, causing the cable to wind up and let go repeatedly.
BTDT.
Dry cable sound is more of a tick tick tick sound

You could be right AZ. I had that roaring sound that would go away once it ran awhile but then it must have locked up and took the cable with it. It's my winter project to get it out and off to J Oliver.

I think AZ is probably right on this one. My speedometer was doing the same thing several years ago, so I lubed the cable - seemed to work at first, then several weeks later it quit completely. I had to have the speedo rebuilt. Good luck.
Thanks for all the input. Whom should I contact on overhauling my speedo head? What kind of turn around should I expect? I still may try greasing the cable it seems to easy not to try.
