Can somebody clear up (or complicate) the time frame (or why the change) in which the C1 seven fin valve cover script changed in height? Was it late '58 that the script was made higher? Someone was telling me that the higher script was used on the higher perfomance engines. Not so sure of the later.
Also the cut out on the side of the valve covers. Those were made for easier removal with the FI units weren't they?

hmmm, i don't know of any way to take off the driver's side valve cover on an FI car without first taking off the air meter ring.

The low-script (.030") 7-fin cover changed to the high-script (.125") cover for appearance reasons during 1958 production, about S/N 3600; that cover continued into 1959 production until about S/N 6000, when the cylinder heads changed from the "staggered" cover holes to the "straight-across" cover holes, and all subsequent versions of the finned covers had the high script.
The cutouts in the inboard flange of the 9-fin covers (to clear the raised runners on the second-design 2x4 intake manifold) appeared at about S/N 1650 (650th car built) in 1956, and continued in all the subsequent versions of the 9-fin and 7-fin covers.
I see them on ebay. They are bringing good money, but still seem to fetch a "somewhat reasonable" price. Is there a good supply of them out there yet, or are they getting more scarce?
