[QUOTE=knight37128;1558514165]You can not use a GM block with a 555. It will not bore to 4.60. You have to use an aftermarket block. Merlin or Dart.
You said it. Not me. You said GM block. I could bore even more. Boring to 4.600" cut out 50Lbs of metal. Sorry again. If you have a responce, make it quick, as it is late.

Just need to add the Bowtie blocks to the Dart and Merlin list. It can do anything they can do. Good stuff.
A 540 or 555 bolts anywhere a 427 does and if you have one built with one of the aftermarket blocks you can still get mechanical fuel pump boss and stock clutch linkage mounts. Plus you have a MUCH better block overall.
Then get some REAL heads that outflow the GM/Edelbrocks and make incredible power. There are may available and header fitment isn't a big issuse..the ports on many are only raised a minimal amount if any. In fact my Hooker headers fit my raised port Brodix heads better than they do stock ones.
The ZZ502 leaves a LOT of power on the table. It runs out of breath very early.....needs at least a cam....heads would be even better.

In case some of this is confusing.. I will try to iron it out.
1. The 502 block is a production based block and GM does not recomend that it be bored over 4.500.... however, I have seen the 502 block bored to 4.560.. a sonic test for wall thickness was performed on
the block that was bored to 4.560... if you wish to go this far you will need to do the same.
2. The Bowtie block is a meaty block put out by the GM... it comes in
different configurations... short deck and tall deck and the maximum
bore that GM recomends for each of those configurations should be
cross refferenced in the GM Performance Parts Catalog, on the Gilbert
Chevrolet website, or at your local GMPP dealer. The Bowtie Blocks
are similar to the aftermarket blocks in their ability to be bored out
fairly significantly for extra cubes.
3. Dart, World Products, Brodix, Donovan, and Keith Black make
aftermarket blocks capable of upper echelon displacements.

502 install
One more thing I thought of,if you've got side pipes its a mistake to hook up the 502 to the std side pipe exhaust as the diameter is too small.Kind of like putting a potato up your tailpipe. My SS headers use 2" primaries into a 3" collector then into 3 1/2 " side pipes using Spiral turbo flow mufflers.I just cant see using the std side pipes as they will cut into your horsepower!! Side pipes are way cool but I have heard stories of them reducing horsepower by up to about 35 when compared to regular thru the frame exhaust so to reduce that loss go with the larger diameter pipes.I used the Stainless Works for the headers and they really jacked me around for almost 4 months on a job they promiced would take only 2 weeks. They were using my job as strictly fill in work when they were done working on other customers $200,000 hot rods. It was my car that they used as a pattern to offer SS headers for a big block. side pipe car.

Since we are just talking here....
502 is not enough? Maybe some machine shop intervention is in order. Put down the boring bar and step slowly away.

I'm considering a 502 install in my 65 small block - 4 spd - sidepipe car. Does anyone know of additional mods that might be needed for a 502 install in a small block car vs a big block car?
Larger radiator, cooling fan(s), electric fuel pump, mallory ignition, 5spd tranny, improved rearend, block hugger headers..... and oh yeah....bigger meats! Is that about it? About twenty grand?
FYI, Corvette City in Denver makes a hi-rise hand laid stinger hood for $1,000 for those who desire ram-induction.
The info on this thread has been very helpful!

Thanks guys....I'll look. Are the mounts for the small block in the same location?
Wonder what a period correct 327/350 blue-printed & balanced engine with approximately 3,000 miles since overhaul is worth?

The money is in the "numbers", not what has been done to it. (sorry) Not that it doesn't add value, but you will be hard pressed to see any of the "balanced & blue-printed" money.

Make sure that the delivery will be by a lift gate truck or local delivery service. Truck drivers are not responsible to unload beyond getting it to the tailgate. Normally the consignee is responsible to get it off the truck. Congratulations on the engine. I had one in a 67 Camaro - you'll have a blast.

I installed a ZZ/502 in my C-3 over 5 years ago. It runs great without any issues.
However, when I replaced the motor in the '67, I used a Merlin 540 for several reasons.
It has the Mark IV external configuration (mechanical fuel pump, clutch pivot boss, stock MK IV oil pan fits).
It also is internally balanced (a horsepower plus) UN-like the 502, and with priority main oiling like the 502/572. It has stiffer block webbing, along with many other performance and longevity enhancements. You can also get as much or more HP out of the Merlin 540 than the GM 572 for less $$$- and it's the STOCK (9.8) deck height.
(Hint- shave the heads from 118 to 110 cc's for a free 50 -75 H.P).- and still run on pump gas!
