I just got my Feb 2007 issue of NCRS Driveline and in the center fold is a picture of a Z06 convertable with 7,800 orginal miles with orginal tires and all now up for sale. It claims its probably is the most unique Corvette in existence and is worth according to the ad $1,000,000. The seller is looking to sell or trade. According to my Corvette black book the Z06 option was offered in convertables. The car in mention just needed a wax job and a cleaning and all orginal parts are intact.(cant believe tires could be usable after sitting over 50 years) My question is does anyone know how many Z06 convertables were built?
until this convertible surfaced at Park City (I believe) or maybe another NCRS show, it was ALWAYS thought NO convertible was ever built with the Z06 option.
This car is the real deal - ONE of ONE - so, is it worth $1 million clams!? who really knows

What makes it the "most unique" corvette in existence? Because they only built one? Virtually every Corvette out there is "one of one" due to their options. Has anyone ever seen 2 identically optioned cars? Nope. My coupe was a one of one with more options therefore it was even more unique. I think I will trademark that: "the very most unique Corvette in existence".
In 1967 I bought one that had been raced. At that time I had no idea if it was real or put together from parts and really didn't care. There are people that know alot more than me about the subject that say it was put together and I believe them. Is there a real way to tell?

Only with original factory and dealer documentation (which the one referenced above has).
that is why I stated real deal - ALL order documentation with the car! don't know very many cars prior to 1967 tank stickers that we have seen with the actual ORDER SHEET!
The Corvette Black book is correct, although the new option was not available from the start of production. In December of 1962, a few months after SOP, it was decided that two changes would be made to the original Z06 option package. First, the package would be offered minus the 36.5 gal fuel tank for coupes, and second, the Z06 option would be offered for conv.
The paperwork is dated 17 December 1962 so likely the first chance one of the new cars with either new option would appear at a dealer would be mid/late January 1963.
I haven't seen the article, but I believe I have seen the car. Two years ago I met the owner of it in Monterey, CA with the car. He was trying to sell it at the RM Auction out there (actually I think he was just testing the waters and trying to get some publicity). This was during the Pebble Beach / Monterey Historic weekend, so there are a ton of very rare cars out there. So many, that I was the only guy talking to this guy and admiring the car. If I remember right, it's brown / tan or some other non-appealing color. The guy told me the whole story and it was very interesting. It was a GM Employee that ordered it and was turned down for the option the first time he ordered, but got it put through later? I remember calling my wife from the auction and having her look it up in the black book to see if it could really exist.
At the end of the night, I think the bid was about $750K and it did not sell.
Here's the original paperwork on the revision dated 17 Dec 62. Probably arrived in the dealers within a few days and orders likely could have entered the system before the end of the year. All Z06 option orders were running slower than typical production so I would expect late January would be the earliest any Z06 conv could have been produced.
I love it when we get answers AND proof from the experts on this forum.
But I've always wondered, what sort of annal retentive character would keep every scrape of paper concerning a car??? Now, at this time of our lives being a tad older and wiser most of us surely keep everything but back then there was girls, grog and mates to run hard with - no thoughts of keeping paper!

Does this mean there are other 63 Z06 convertables out there or is this a one of a kind.
Just a guess but I suspect there may have been others. I've heard rumors of Z06 conv's for years but never saw one that was absolutely convincing or documented, other than the one described above. Believe it was Yenko that decided a conv would have less overall drag and body lift than the coupe body at high speed? I think he was one of the first to race a 63 conv instead of a coupe in 63. His car may have been one of the Z conv's.
Forgive my ignorance...but I have wondered about this on and off as the newer Z06 Corvettes have become popular and are now clearly labled Z06. Was the Z06 option package available in all midyears? What about C1s and C3s? If there was a Z06 in later years what options would have been included?
