Default Ignition Question

I have seen those kits that fit inside the distributor leaving the car looking stock, but eliminating the points. Has anyone done this and is it worth it?
Thanks,
Alex :chevy

I changed the points in my distributor to a Mallory uni-lite<sp> about three years ago. My ignition has been maintenance free ever since. My points would start missing above 6000 rpm when they got tired. I would have to replace them every six months. I tried stock and high performance points. The Mallory has gone all the way to 7000, by accident, without missing.

I have been running a Pertronix for 5-6 years now. The ONLY drawback is that the dwell cannot be adjusted. My meter says it is locked in at 36 degrees and never varies.

The new Pertronix "Ignitor II" has addressed the fixed-dwell issue; it varies dwell electronically based on rpm (although it still can't be adjusted).
